The answer is given in the following padyas. hiMdanEka janmagaLali noMdu yOniyalli baMdu iMdirEsha hariya pAdava hoMdabEkeMbuvarige Ans 1)Those who want to seek shelter in the feet of Lord Hari, the Lord of Indra having realised fully well about the miseries of rebirth in various life-forms. prakrithibaMdhadalli siluki sakala vishayagaLali noMdu akaLaMkacharita hariya pAdabhakuti bEkeMbuvarige Ans 2) Those who want to imbibe bhakthi for the feet of Lord Hari knowing His great charitra, His leelas and attributes having realised fully that the bondage of prakrithi is whirling one in the world of sensual and material pleasures. ArumaMdi vairigaLanu sEralIsadaMte jaridu dhIranAgi hariya pAda sErabEkeMbuvarige Ans3) Those who want to become fearless, filled with good knowledge and want to surrender at the feet of Hari, having understood that the six enemies of the soul –kama, krodha, lobha.moha, mada and matsarya cannot be overcome without the true knowledge which can purify the mind and free it from these enemies. ghOra saMsArAMbudhige paramajNAnaveMba pAde Eri mellane hariyapAda sErabEkeMbuvarige Ans 4) Those who want to tread the path of true knowledge that can take one towards the Lord effortlessly, being aware of the terrible ocean called as samsaara. hInabuddiyiMda Srihayavadananna jaridu tAnu badukalariyadiralu tOri koTTa madhwamuniya Ans 5)Those who understand the great service done by Sri Madhvamuni to struggling mankind who had become bereft of the truth about the supreme control and supremacy of the Lord Hayavadana in all aspects . Here the word bAri is key to understanding this devaranama correctly. After all we know from scriptures the importance of knowledge, sadhana and that instanteously nothing can be accomplished. Then why is Sri Vadirajaru saying it. To understand we focus our attention on the word bAri .It is used in two ways . a) once b) a periods of time Here Vadirajaru talks about the release being assured for anyone who thinks even once of Srimad Anandatheertharu with full devotion. This is true because just one thought with reverence for this great guru may not give mukthi, but will surely become the first step in the long journey to mukthi. Once the journey commences then it will be guided by the guru. The same jiva takes birth many times and understands the shastras and the greatness of God with the guidance of the granthas written by this jagadguru. After all many many births are required to understand and acquire jnAna as told by Sri Krishna in the BG 7.19. bahunAm janmanAm ante jNAnavAnmAm prapadyate...†hiMdanEka janmagaLali noMdu yOniyalli baMdu When Vadirajaru talks about one who has the comprehension that he/she has struggled in many life forms before coming to this human form and wants to reach the Lord’s feet, he definitely hints about the journey to mukthi being a long one as said in the BG verse above. Whatever the capability of the jiva, to understand the Lord (limited by capcity)the guru’s grace is essential. This is told by many Dasarus in many devaranamas. Guruvina gulAma nAguva tanaka doreyadanna mukuthi is a well known devaranama by Sri Purandara Dasaru who talks of the special place of the guru in the journey of the soul. If the guru is accepted wholeheartedly by the jiva then mukthi will follow. Sri Narayana Padithacharya in his Sri Madhva vijaya says Mukunda bhakthi guru bhakthi jayai.... Mukunda is the form of the Lord who grands mukthi or release from bondage. If Guru bhakthi is there, then due to Guru’s grace, one develops intense devotion to the Lord and aspires to learn about the Lord and His magnificent attributes, about His leelas of creation, sustainance, destruction, about His supreme control on all sentient and insentient beings. These subtle aspects of the Lord are imbibed by the soul, due to the Guru’s grace. Sri MukyaprAna took the avatara of Hanuman due to the intense prayers of the sajjanas/devathas. He understood the Lord’s wish to be the same and began his seva to the Lord which was spread over three avatars.Hanuman ,Bheema and Madhva. shreevallabhAgyna sasreMdrayajyA ... MV-1.9 Sri Vadirajaru is giving four names referring to Madhva for contemplation .. 1. Anandatheertha 2. Poornaprajna 3. Sarvagnya raaya 4. Madhva raaya In the following charanams the benefit of each upasana is also given. Let us explore the import of these names and their special significance to sadhana. It is stated in the Shastras that as one does the upasana , so one reaps the results. yathA yathA upAsyate tathaiva bhavati... So the method of doing the upasana has to be understood though the guru and then attempted as per one’s ability. Smarane is thinking in the mind with complete concentration on various aspects of the subject concerned. Just knowing Anandatheertha as the name of the Acharya who propagated TatvavAda may not be referred to here by Sri Vadirajaru. Understanding the attributes of the Acharya which make him Anandatheertha is called as smarane. Theertha means water. Theertha also means shastra. Just as a thirsty person can be truly happy when he is able to drink pure water, so also a jiva who is struggling in samsaara and becomes a jignyasu ie starts to thrist for knowledge then the pure knowledge of the shastras can give such a one pure bliss. And Sri Ananda theertha is the personification of the knowledge that is contained in the Shastras. He has the maximum knowledge that can be had by a jiva-He is called as jivOttama(One with the maximum capacity). Trying to understand the great competence of our Acharya within our limited ability is smarane. pUrNaprajna is the name given to Srimad Acharya when he was initiated into sanyasa. pUrNa means complete. pUrNa also means the Lord. Prajna means awareness. One who knows the Lord fully, only limited by his capacity , considering that the Lord has infinite auspicious attributes, each one infinite in all aspects.is pUrnaprajna. One who knows the Lord as the complete being is pUrna prajna. One who knows that the Lord is completely full of auspicious attributes and devoid of any defects is pUrnaprajNa. One who knows that the Lord has a body made completely of jnAna and Ananda ie knowledge and bliss is pUrnaprajNa. One who knows that the entire creation is there to learn about the completeness of the Lord. One who knows that every act of man should lead to discovering the greatness of the Lord and seeing His complete control everywhere in every incident is pUrnaprajna.............many many more can be derived. Once who does smarane of Srimad Acharya as pUrnaprajNa is sure to acquire release from miseries. How so ? It is because Srimad Acharya showed the truth about God’s nature of complete, auspicious attributes and devoid of defects. He has mentioned this in every one of his works and right at the beginning in most works. “Anuvyakyana,Vishnutatva vinirnaya, Geetha bhasya, tatparya etc... If one understand this statement as it should be then mukthi is a gaurantee. vishNu sarvaguNaiH pUrNe jNAtvA saMsAravarjitaH nirdukkAnaMdabhuk nityam tatsamIpe sa mOdate || “He who knows Lord Vishnu as possessed of infinite attributes gets rid of the bondage and enjoys the bliss in God’s presence.†Vishnu is itself the attribute of the Lord which describes His presence everywhere, infinite in space, time and guNas. The shastras’ true import was obscured by wrong interpretations which were contradicting this all-important aspect. Srimad Acharya wrote the Brahma Sutra bhashya vanquishing 21 bhasyas which were obscuring the truth from the sadhakas. prakrithibaMdhadalli siluki sakala vishayagaLali noMdu akaLaMkacharita hariya pAdabhakuti bEkeMbuvarige The shastras clearly talk about the cause of the jiva’s attachment to material things as being the prakrithi, the web of the three gunas-satva,rajas and tamas imposed on the jiva by the Lord. It is absolutely necessary to transcend the effects of these three gunas as told by Sri Krishna in the BG . traiguMya vishayAH vedAH nistraiguMya bhava arjunA The Lord says that without the correct interpretation, the Vedas disclose only that information which will entice the jiva further into bondage. One has to delve deep into the Vedas and understand its underlying, implied imports in order to cross over this bondage of prakrithi. One who has a guru who is Sarvagya- who is the knower of the true import of the Vedas, then definitely such a one can consider oneself as on the path to liberation and it would be a matter of time before one is led there by the guru. Let us sing and implement Vadirajaru’s verse... oMdu bAri smaraNe sAlade sarvaj~jarAyara Madhva: ArumaMdi vairigaLanu sEralIsadaMte jaridu dhIranAgi hariya pAda sErabEkeMbuvarige oMdu bAri smaraNe sAlade madhvarAyara Singing in glory of this jagadguru (Madhva raya) who is described by Narayana Panditharu as Api trilOkya bahirullasaMti tamo haraMti muhurAMtaraM cha dishyadishaM no vishadAm jayaMti madhvasya kirtiMdinanAthadiptim || 1.3 “ The sun is well known for lighting up the entire world. Even so, the sun cannot reach into the closed areas of the internal pindAda ie the mental space of the jiva. Nothing can remove the darkness of the mental space except the light of jNAna which shines forth from this magnificient personality known as Madhva and it is no wonder His splendour excels that of the Sun.†The mental diseases of the mind are the Aruvarigalu that Sri Vadirajaru is referring to. Doing the upasana of Madhva who removes the ignorance from the minds with the shining light of jnAna is the remedy that cure the mind of these ills. After giving the explicit benefits in the various aspects of sadhana for each name of Srimad Madva, Sri Vadirajaru sums up. ghOra saMsArAMbudhige paramajNAnaveMba pADe Eri mellane hariyapAda sErabEkeMbuvarige The final ultimatum to a jiva. “If we feel that we are drowning in the miseries of samsaara, then we should take to the path of paramajNAna, the highest knowledge and walk it slowly to reach the Lord’s feet.†Distinguishing the world as a fearful ocean full of dangerous things is by itself difficult as the attachment to the body shrouds the judgement of what is good. This is because what is good for the body is not necessarily good for the soul and since the body is physical and can be seen , the comforts of the body are given precedence over the good of the soul. But once it is understood correctly, that the body is but an instrument for the soul to acquire knowledge then taking to the path of knowledge and moving onwards is possible . Saying it or writing about it does not mean much, implementing it in every aspect of life is what counts. This implementation is possible only with the Guru’s grace. hInabuddiyiMda Srihayavadananna jaridu tAnu badukalariyadiralu tOri koTTa madhwamuniya We have arrived at a full circle. Lord Madhva arrived on the scene when the true knowledge about scriptures was obscured . Due to this the intellect of the people had become flawed and they did not know how to live. Living is learning about the greatness of God. This was taught by Mukyaprana in his avatara as Sri Madhvacharya. He says that every input that we get through the senses should lead us to explore the magnificence of the Lord. Thinking and praying to Srimad Anandatheertharu and the lineage of gurus in his parampare is a necessary approach for all who want to achieve their purpose of life- mukthi. sri krishnArpaNamastu I am not the doer,Lord Hari is the doer Whatever He makes me do is His worship by His grace R.Parimala Get your preferred Email name!
