Since we cannot fast on Dasami thithi, we follow Sri Krishna Astami this year & break the fast on Navami, next day morning. This year, Shravana Krishna Astami falls on Karka or Kataka (Leo) month. Udupi Astha Mathas worship Sri Krishna Jayanthi as per Souramana Simha month. As per Souramana Sri Krishna Jayanthi falls on Friday, September 11th 2009. This falls on Souramana Simha month, Bhadrapada Krishna paksha (paksha maasa), Ashtami, Rohini nakshatra as per MBTN & Sri Vishnu Theertha quotes above. As per Srimad Acharya's Mahabharatha Tatparya Nirnaya (MBTN), Chapter 12, 120 th shloka, regarding Sri Krishna's birth, yasminnabde bhAdrapade sa mAse siMsthayorgururavyoH pareshaH | Meaning: That year in which, in the month of Bhadrapada, when Brihaspathi & Surya were in Simharasi, that Sarvottama Sri Krishna took avatara. siMhamAse tu rohiNyAM pUjayennaMdanaMdanam.h | ---shrI viShNutIrThAH " saMnyAsapaddhatiH " On the eighth day of the month of Simha when the star Rohini is present, one has to undertake a fast & worship Sri Krishna with Yashoda. samprApte shravaNe mAsi kR^iShNapaxe yadA bhavet.h | kR^iShNajanmAShTamI j~neyA mahApAtakanAshanI || rohiNIsahitA sA chet.h jayantI nAma sAtithi || ---sanatkumArasaMhitA (pa~nchasaMskArasaMgraha) The eighth day of the dark half of the month of Shravana is called Krishna Astami; this is very efficacious in destroying sin; if the star Rohini is seen on that day (at midnight), it is called Jayanthi. I was blessed with an opportunity to talk to Sri Suvidhyendra Theertha Swamiji & I requested Him to explain why there is a difference in dates (not every year but once in 3-4 year period) for Sri Krishna Astami within Madhwa Mathas. He quoted from MBTN, Sri Krishna Jayanthi nirnaya & Sri Vishnu Theertha's quotes (all above quotes) & gave an answer. If I had understood right, Swamiji said during Srimad Acharya's period in 13th century, the Chandramana month (for example Sharavana month) started from prathama AFTER Full Moon day & the month ended on Full Moon day (Pournami). Bhadrapada month started prathama after Full moon day. Hence there is difference in dates. Now during last few centuries, as we know, Chandramana month starts prathama AFTER Amavasya & the month ends on Amavasya. Souramanan dates are counted serially from 1 beginning with a Sankramana day (movement of Sun from one rasi to next rasi) till the next sankramana (similar to the English calendar dates Aries, Tauraus ....) Since, as per Sri Jayanthi nirnaya, mAdhwas who follow Chandramana calender worship Sri KrishnAshTami which falls on Shravana Krishna Ashtami. mAdhwas who follow Souramana calender like Udupi Mathas (Geographically, coastal area, Udupi comes under Parashurama Kshetra), follow month of Simha, Bhadrapada Krishna paksha Ashtami. Hence there is a difference in dates. Coming back to the question below, yes, as per Sri KrishnAmrutha Maharnava, we have to fast on KrishnAstami & have pArane, next day morning after devara puje. Though there are sampradayas to have the prasada after Sri Krishna Astami puje & arghya, I think it is wrong to consume Upittu or sweets, khara without giving neivedya to Goddess Lakshmi devi & Vayu devaru which can be given only after devara puje in the morning. Secondly, Curd cannot be used or given neivedhya this month due to ChaturmAsya vrata. >>i asked our family achar >> sometime back and he concurs that you must eat what you have offered to the >> gods on the same evening Yes, we should eat whatever is offered to the Lord. >>> but, i know of being told that it is celebrated differently (esp in our >>> home) is that if the arghya is before 12 am, and after we do naivedya to sri >>> krishna, we give arghya and take non-musure items like 5 sweets and 5 khara, >>> uppit, kshira and curd avalakki. Hence, it is only better off Upittu or Curd avalakki is not prepared on Sri Krishna Astami day. I am not sure if the sampradaya I follow is right. We drink very very small amount of badami milk with sugar to celebrate Sri Krishna's birth after giving Arghya & devara puje. And we do the full devara puje in the morning & have pArane. haraye namaH, Shobha Srinivasan On Mon, Aug 10, 2009 at Mon Aug 10, 2009 2:29 am (PDT) at <IT_Madhva_Sangha > wrote: > > janmastami - confusion on practice - pls guide ! > > Posted by: " ramesh " ramesh.ajgaonkar > > > > I understand that as per sri madhvacharya in his krishnamurtha-maharnava, it > has been made clear that one must fast during gokulastami and do parane in > the morning next day. in this years case, it will be 13th aug 2009 is the > fasting and arghya and 14th morning is the parane like dwadasi. > > but, i know of being told that it is celebrated differently (esp in our > home) is that if the arghya is before 12 am, and after we do naivedya to sri > krishna, we give arghya and take non-musure items like 5 sweets and 5 khara, > uppit, kshira and curd avalakki. > > does this consummate with the correct practice? i asked our family achar > sometime back and he concurs that you must eat what you have offered to the > gods on the same evening after fasting till arghya time. i am told that sri > vyasaraja mutt practise is to have phala-aahara in the evening after arghya. > > pls let me know. > > -- > Ramesh Ajgaonkar > Back to top -- -- parameshvara bhaktirnAma niravadhika ananta anavadya kalyANaguNatva GYAnapUrvakaH svAtmAtmIya samasta vastubhyo aneka guNAdhiko antarAya sahasrenApya pratibaddo nirantara premapravAhaH ------------- a verse from Nyaya Sudha Devotion to the Lord is that continuously surging flood of deep love & attachment to the Lord of the Universe, which is impregnable by any amount of obstacles encountered in its march. It should be of such a quality & texture as would transcend all other forms of love which one may bear towards one's own self, or to his nearest & dearest ones in life, or to his most cherished possessions. It should be founded on an unshakable intellectual & emotional conviction in the Majesty of the Lord- as the embodiment of all spiritual excellences.
