Guest guest
||shrI hari vAyu gurubhyO namaH || Sri KrishnAshtami or Sri Krishna Jayanthi is mandatory to fast nirjala (no food or drink whole day). People who follow SauramAna calendar will give importance to month of Simha rasi or VIRGO (Krishnapaksha Ashtami) whereas people who follow Chandramana calendar will give importance to Shravana maasa, Krishnapaksha, Ashtami for Sri Krishna Jayanthi/AshThami fasting. Some years, month of Simha or VIRGO will come during shrAvana mAsa & some years the month of Simha or VIRGO will come during Bhadrapada mAsa. But for both Souramana calendar followers and Chandramana calendar followers, Krishnapaksha Ashtami remains the same. KrishnAstami or Krishna Jayanthi will come either in the Chandramana month of Shravana mAsa or Bhadrapada mAsa for sure or in Souramana month of Kataka rashi (LEO) ~July 24th to August 23rd or Simha rasi (VIRGO) ~August 24rd to Sept 23th) for sure. Krishna Jayanthi will come when Rohini nakshatra falls on Krishnapaksha Ashtami during Moonrise in those months mentioned. Udupi AsThamatha follows Souramana calendar hence they fast on Krishnajayanthi which falls on month of Simha rasi (VIRGO), Krishnapaksha Ashtami whereas other Mathas such as Sri Raghavendra Matha, Sri Vyasaraja Matha, Sri Uttaradi Mathas follow Chandramana calendar hence Krishnaastami falls on Shravana mAsa Krishnapaksha Ashtami which was last month. Please check for other details regarding Sri KrishnAshtami/Sri KrishnA Jayanthi vrata previous postings from VMS. In USA, Ashtami starts after 11am, Friday, September 11th, Rohini nakshtra starts only on Thursday early morning after 1 am. Since we don’t have (Rohini nakshatra/AsThami) on the same day, this year, we had Sri Krishna Asthami last month 13th. (Shravana Krishnapaksha AsThami). Since Udupi Mathas follow Souramana calendar, they do Sri Krishna Jayanthi which falls Souramana month of Simha (VIRGO), Krishnapaksha AsThami hence they follow Sri Krishna Jayanthi on September 11th this year. haraye namaH, Shobha Srinivasan vms-philosophy [vms-philosophy ] On Behalf Of Sandeep Bhavsar Tuesday, September 01, 2009 5:14 PM vms-philosophy [vms-philosophy] Krishna Jayanthi fast? Namaskar , 1. For those who observe Krishnasthami fast , is it optional to fast on Krishna Jayanthi or is it mandatory? 2. Why does it fall on separate dates , a month apart . Thanks in advance.
