Unprecedented floods in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh—Appeal for financial assistance.

Dear Reader,

Last week’s unusually heavy rains in South India have led to the flooding of many parts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The incessant rains have inundated very large areas leaving a trail of death and destruction; hundreds of people have died, thousands of houses have collapsed and lakhs of people have lost all their possessions. Many holy places including Mantralayam with the most famous vrindavana of Shri Raghavendra Swamiji are submerged in water.

Relief operations by the respective Governments are going full steam with the active co-operation of many NGOs. But the magnitude of the calamity is so high that the efforts are considered inadequate to meet even the basic needs of the suffering millions; they need augmentation on a very large scale with public participation.

The Uttaradi Mutt has already come forward to help; it has made arrangements to serve food to the affected people at various Relief Centres. The Styadhyana Vidyapeetha too has planned to lend financial assistance to the people in distress. At a meeting held yesterday at the Vidyapeetha, it announced its own contribution of Rs.2 lakh and appealed to all to contribute their mite. A copy of the appeal is enclosed. It also nominated Shri. Pramod Mahuli, Treasurer, Vidyapeetha, to mobilize funds, to liaise with concerned authorities and to see to their proper utilization. The Vidyapeetha is also contemplating rendering physical help and proposes to depute volunteers to various Relief Camps. Details are being finalised.
