Gopashtami: Festival of Cows

To -morrow 26th Oct AshTami is an imporatant day during Karteeka MAsa.

On this day lord Sri Krishna became a qualified cowherd.

Before this day, he was a keeper of the calves.

"Thus Sri Krishna, along with His elder brother Balarama, passed the childhood age known as kaumara and stepped into the age of pauganda, from the sixth year up to the tenth. At that time, all the cowherd men conferred and agreed to give those boys who had passed their fifth year charge of the cows in the pasturing ground. Given charge of the cows, Krishna and Balarama traversed Vrindavana, purifying the land with Their lotus footprints."

In His honour, and thinking of Him one should worship the cows with ten upachars, with the mantra "om gave namah" etc. In some places they dress a small boy as Krishna to invoke stronger remembrance of the pastime.

One can anoint or "paint" the horns with turmeric and put Kumkum on their foreheads, and hand marks on to their bodies. One should then feed them fresh sweet grasses and circumambulate them.

Pranama (obeisances):

om namo gobhyah srimatibhyah saurabheyibhya eva ca namo brahma sutabhyas ca pavitrabhyo namo namah

Gopashtami is a festival that commemorates the day Shri kRishNa was promoted to cowherd from a herder of calves. On the anniversary of this day, which usually falls in November, herders bring hundreds of cows and their calves to Nathadwara from nearby barns owned by the temple.

The cows are beautifully decorated for the occasion: they are painted, their horns are gilded, and they wear ankle bracelets and splendid peacock-feather crowns. As the herders drive the animals through the narrow streets of Nathadwara, men and boys tease and harry them in a riotous rite called "cow play." The angry cows charge their hecklers, who beat a hasty retreat only to return and start the play again as soon as the beasts have calmed down a bit. Finally the cows are driven to Govardhan Puja Courtyard where they are rewarded with a feast of sweet dishes specially prepared for them.

Gopashtami is the day in which Nanda aja sent his children Krishna and Balarama to herd the cows for the first time.

in the Karttika-mahatmya section of the Padma Purana we find the following verse:

"The eighth lunar day of the bright fortnight of the month of Karttika is known by authorities as Gopashtami. From that day, Lord Vasudeva served as a cowherd, whereas previously He had tended the calves."

On Gopashtami Go- Puja (cow puja) is done and fresh grass and delicious food is offered to the cows, along with nice cloths and necklaces, The devotees are decorating the horns of the cows and singing many Bhajans and Kirtans to Lord Govinda- Gopala.

In plsces where there are no cows one can worshop a statue or an idol or a picture of a cow.

In this connection, it reminds me of the Padya 25 of Sarva prateeka Sandhi of Sri Harikathamruta Sara of Sri Jagannatha Dasaru. I would like to write in Kannada so that the quintessence could be appreciated in the local language.

Here it is:
