Madhava is the Lord (dhava) of Mother (Ma) in her form of Lakshmi, the Divine Mother who is the consort of Lord Vishnu. It also means the Lord (dhava) of knowledge (ma). Further, madhu means honey. There is a special kind of knowledge mentioned in the Upanishads, the ancient Hindu scriptures. It is called Madhu-Vidya, meaning, "honey knowledge." This is the sweet, spiritual wisdom that dawns upon one who reaches the heights of spiritual attainment. The Lord is the master of this knowledge and so He is also called Madhava. We can know Him through experience of Madhu-Vidya. Sri Krishna can be understood by three spiritual sadhanas, namely1) Manana - through thinking in the form of deep, self-reflection and self-enquiry2) Dhyana - sustained concentration and3) Yoga - various disciplines and practices to join the individual consciousness with the universal, divine consciousness. At the time their love redoubles,(many are) those meditate on His name.(Many are) the true followers of the one praised by Tyagaraja! Music descends on the city like the thick ‘Markazhi’ smog and lingers for almost a month. Specially in Chennai. . As it tapers around the first week of January, another town near Thanjavur takes the cue and gears up for paying its annual obeisances to the great sage who saw music as means to moksha or deliverance- Sadhguru Shri Thyagaraja.The annual Aradhana at Thiruvayaru is an important and unique cultural event backed by a rich tradition spanning 163 years. Musicians of all hues, regardless of experience or stature, pay their soulful tributes to the sage through the very renditions with which he regaled Lord Rama and merged with him finally.It was in the wee hours of a Pushya Bahula Panchami day in 1847 (corresponding to the Tamil year ‘Prabhava’) that Sadhguru attained eternity chanting the name of Rama. Since then Panchapakesiah, his only grandson was performing the aradhana. Later, as Panchapakesiah had no issues, some of his disciples like Narasimha Bhagavathar and Panchu Bhagavathar continued the event organizing music concerts in memory of the Sadhguru. Like all good things, these memorial services also came to an end as the duo parted company due to some misunderstanding. Petty egos, groupism and incessant politicking precluded revival of the aradhana.What followed was a dark period of drift; decades of neglect and apathy. The samadhi of the saint was but reduced to a muddy mound surrounded by filth.The sorry state of affairs continued until 1920 when Bangalore Nagarathnamma, an ardent devotee of Saint Thyagaraja arrived on the scene. Moved to tears by the awful condition of the sage’s Samadhi, she swung into action to retrieve the premises and restore it to its one-time glory. The place belonged to the Thanjavur royalty and using her own funds, she procured it and created a temple for the saint.Nagarathnammal: a profileBorn in Mysore on November 3, 1878 out of wedlock between Subba Rao, an eminent lawyer and Puttulakshmi, a devadasi, Nagarathnam faced a lot of hurdles and humiliations. Notwithstanding traumatic childhood experiences, she mastered the nuances of classical music and dance under the tutelage of Giribhatta Thammayya, a highly revered musician in the maharaja’s court. Her virtuosity brought her wealth and fame but not social recognition. But that did not diminish her passion for the art nor deter her from pursuing it with zest.She was presented a portrait of Sadhguru Thyagaraja by Vidwan Umayalpuram Panchapakesa Bhagavatar, an eminent musician of her times. Exactly 13 days after she got it, she received a letter from her Guru Bidaram Krishnappa wherein he had bemoaned the pitiable plight of Thyagaraja’s Samadhi at Thiruvayaru and exhorted her to take up its restoration forthwith. And that brought her to the haloed precincts in 1920. The rest, as they say, was history but it wasn’t as easy as saying it!The taskThere were too many impediments; too much of politics. If at all there was any unanimity among various groups, it was in scuttling the stupendous task that the lady from Mysore had embarked on. She saw it through with her patience and perseverance. Commenced by her on October 27, 1921, the refurbishing operations culminated in a glittering music festival in 1925. But for the solitary interregnum in 1948 when the aradhana had to be cancelled on January 30th on account of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination, the celebrations have continued till date.Individual accomplishmentsNagarathnamma was the first lady singer to have performed a full-fledged concert on stage at a time when it was only a men’s prerogative. And that’s not all. Her enormous earnings through concerts made her the first IT assessee among artistes those days.She proved her ingenuity by designing a tamboora that could be easily dismantled during long travels and reassembled later.She belonged to an age in which parochial thoughts were unknown. People were unfettered by sectarian, regional and linguistic biases. Besides Kannada, her mother tongue, Nagarathnamma was proficient in Sanskrit and Tamil. She also had to her credit several treatises on music and dance. Nagarathnamma collected the palm scripts, scattered across the Thanjavur province, of ‘Radhika Santha Vanam’, a monumental work by the wife of Pratapa Rudran, the Maratha ruler of Thanjavur and recompiled it.Nagarathnamma had the courage, vision and tenacity to accomplish an awesome task she had chosen for herself unmindful of all the indifference and skepticism. Had it not been for her, the Samadhi of a legendary saint who was in direct communion with Lord Rama would have been lost forever.The lady behind the revival of Thyagaraja AradhanHaving completed her life’s mission, Nagarathnamma attained the lotus feet of the Lord on 19th May, 1952 at her 77th year. Today, Thyagaraja Aradhanas are being celebrated not only in Thiruvayaru but also various cities across the world. The saint’s Pancharatna kriti, “endaro mahanubhavulu, andariki vandanamu†rendered in unison by the musicians rents the air. And perhaps, it is the best tribute the devotees of classical music can pay to Nagarathnamma, that great lady who rediscovered and revived a tradition for us. The Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana is the largest Indian classical music festival outside of India as seen by many. It was first celebrated in 1978 and has now grown to be a 10-day festival with more than 8,000 attendees with 2,000 appearing for the opening weekend. The year 2010 is the Aradhana's 33rd year. G Venkoba Rao in his Indian Antiquary book says that he lived in the kingdom of Gajapathy in 1263. Further he indicated it in the Indian Antiquary, vol xliii (1914) page 264. After passing the responsibility of the kingdom to the Yuvaraja, he takes the Moola seetharamaidols and hands over to Sriman Madhwar at Udipi. Acharya having worshipped them for 80 days hands them over to Sri Padmanabhathirtha and leaves for Badarikaashram. The Vrindavana of this great ascetic isalso in Chakra Tirtha, Hampi, some distance from Nava Vrindavana where 9other great Madhva saints have decided to stay after casting off theirmortal frames.The location is in the middle of the river Thungabhadra, not easily accessible and cut off during floods. The Vrindavana itself is located on a huge stone boulder and is not reached for every day worship. Sri NarahariTirtha was one of the first converts of the young Purnaprajna along with SriPadmanabha Tirtha on the banks of the Godavari river, on his way back from Badarikashrama. He was a many splendored personality - considered as a great statesman, warrior, ascetic and devotee all put together. I think it would be appropriate to remember his life events in as much as they are revealed tous in the mists of time.There is a traditional sthothra called Narhariya Sthothra which gives a rather a fanciful account of how Sri Narahari Tirtha became a regent of Kalinga (modern Orissa). When the old king died, the ministers sent the royal elephant with a garland to choose the next king, as the prince was still a boy.The choice fell on Sri Narahari Tirtha, who had gone there on the orders of Acharya Madhva to get the idols of Mula Rama (resting in the treasury of the Kalinga kingdom). Sri Narahari ruled Kalinga for 12 years as a regent and handed over the throne when the boy came of age. Except for a brief while, when Sri Vyasaraja took over the throne of Vijayanagara, perhaps Sri Narahari Tirtha would be the only Madhva ascetic who was actually a king.Sri B N K Sharma in his History of the Dvaita school of Vedanta however feels that the reality might well be that as his father had also held high office, probably as a minister in the same kingdom, Sri Narahari Tirtha became a powerful person who virtually ruled Kalinga, in the normal political process, and not solely for the purpose of procuring the idols, as the fanciful story seems to imply. In any case, the position of authority occupied by Sri NarahariTirtha in Kalinga is well documented by as many as 9 inscriptions, including the famous Sri Kurmam and Simhachalam temple inscriptions which have helped to fix precisely the period of Acharya Madhva. These cover a period of 1264 - 1294 AD. The Sri Kurmam inscription is dated 1281 AD. Even the earliest dated 1264 AD designates him as Sripada, indicating an earlier conversion of Sri Shyama sastry (which was his name earlier). The Sri Kurmam inscription also refers to his prowess as a Swordsman in getting rid of Sabaras and in protecting the temple. The lineage of ascetics from Sri Purushotthama Tirtha (Acchyutha Preksha of Sumadhva vijaya, the great Ananda Tirtha (Acharya Madhva) and himself is clearly stated in the inscription itself. It is also significant that Sri Narahari Tirtha had already ruled for an earlier period, before this and went on making grants to temples ON HIS OWN for another 13 years after the Sri Kurmam inscription in 1281 AD.The Mathsya rulers of Oddavadi became independent of the Gangas and were converted into Vaishnavas by him. He also converted many aristocratic and princely families as madhvas, who till flourish in coastal Andhra and adjoining states.15 works have been attributed to Sri Narahari Tirtha.None of them are unfortunately printed and only 2 of them are available in manuscript form. Out of the commentaries on Dasha Prakaranas of Acharya Madhva, 2 on Vishnuthathva Nirnaya and Karma Nirnaya are quoted and criticised by Sri JayaTirtha. They are not presently available. His commentary on Githabhashya is also quoted with approval by Sri JayaTirtha. His Teeka onYamakaBharatha of Acharya Madhva is available in Manuscript form in Mysore. Oriental Library. Sri Narahari Tirtha is also believed to be the originator of the so called Dasakoota and many Devaranamas are attributed to him. He used the Ankitha of Narahari itself and used a language which must have been prevalent in North Karnataka at the time. There is an excellent composition with 15 stanzas called Thilako ninnolage neene, which is too long to be included here. With his scholarly knowledge he preached and publicised Bhagavatha Dharma not only through the vedic knowledge and also through Hari Kiirthanas which he composed. This has great impact on the society at that time for social change. Shri Narahari Teertharu was not only a great saint and also royal pontiff.Shri Narahari Teertharu was presumably from Andhra or Orissa. There is no reliable information about his early life and career. A short praise of 13 Sragdharas called Narahariyatistotra professes to give full details of his life. But this is legendary and late in date and hence unreliable forhistocial purposes. Tradition has been persistent, however that he was, for sometime Minister in Kalinga.The Narahariyati stotra and some other works also allude to his ministry which is said to have lasted twelve years. The fact of ministry is confirmed by the evidence of inscriptions from Shrikurmam and Simhacalam temples.The Narahariyati stotra makes out that he went to Kalinga at the orders of his Guru, AnandaTeertharu, to procure the idols of Mularama and Sita (which had a legendary history behind them and) which happened then to be in the state treasury of Kalinga. An opportunity presented itself when the Kalinga King died. His ministers, in time honoured fashion, sent out the state-elephant to pick up and bring them a proper regent. By some stroke of luck, the choice of the elephant fell on Narahari and he was placed on the throne. After 12 years when the Prince came of age, he relinquished his office. The King, in gratitude, bade him choose any presents he would like and the monk asked for the idols, for which he had come there and got them. These he presented to Madhva.The Matsya rules of Oddavadi became independent of the Gangas and were converted to Vaisnavism by Narahari Teertharu. Arjuna became Narasimha Vardhana, Annamaraja Gopalavardhana and Munjaditya Shrirangavardhana. Shri Narahari Teertharu was also responsible for the conversion of many princely and aristocratic families of Kalinga and Andhra regions to Madhva fold. The descedents of these families still flourish in the coastal Andhra and adjoining states. Overview of his LiteratureThe earliest Dasa of whom we have definite information is Shri Narahari Teertharu. He has already been mentioned as one of the direct disciples of Madhva. Madhva himself is believed by some to have left a few songs in Kannada. This is however, doubtful; though there is no doubt that he set the ball rolling by his stirring pieces of devotional lyrics such as the Dvadasa-stotra and other compositions.Coming to Shri Narahari Teertharus compositions only three songs of his has been discovered so far. They are 'yanthu marulade nanenthu' meaning How deluded have I become how deluded.... Seond one is 'hariye idu sariye..' meaning Hari is this proper and 'tiliko ninnologe neene..' meaning knowing within thyself. His ankita is "Narahari" or "Narahari Raghupathi". Assuming that Narahari was fairly well-acquainted with Kannada to be able to compose songs in that language, even though it was not his mother-tongue (as he was either an Andhra or a native of Oriya) we have still to fill the gap of over a hundred years between him and the next famous figure in the history of the Dasa Koota : Shripadraja. Perhaps, the reference to Shri Narahari Teertharu in the Shrikurmam inscription may lend weight to the supposition that he was specially connected with the rise of some kind of great devotional movement.Internal evidence of the songs of the Dasas would however seem to give the credit of pioneering the Dasa Movement to Shripadaraja.
