Guest guest Posted December 31, 2009 Report Share Posted December 31, 2009 Udupi: Road to be named after saint-composer Udupi Dec 19: The road connecting Ambagilu and Manipal passing through Perampalli will be named “Nekkar Krishnadasa Marg†after the 18th Century saint-composer Varaha Thimappa. Home Minister V.S. Acharya will unveil the plaque of the newly named road on December 20 Speaking to presspersons here on Friday, president of the Nekkar Krishnadasa (Varaha Thimappa) Foundation P.N. Gopalkrishna Rao said that the saint-composer Krishnadasa who had the pen name “Varaha Thimappa†was born in the family of Nekkars, who lived at Perampalli in Shivally village near Udupi, in the 18th Century. He was one of the prominent “haridasasâ€. He had written many “kirtanas†on Lord Thimappa, Lord Krishna and others. Two of his compositions “Lakshmi Kalyana†and “Sri Krishna Charitre†are regarded as classics. Varaha Thimappa’s works were discovered and collected by Basel Missionary Hermann Mögling (1811-1881) from Germany. Another German Missionary Ferdinand Kittel (1832-1903) had said that Varaha Thimappa was one of the three great “haridasas†along with Purandaradasa and Kanakadasa.
