This small village houses the ancient temple of shrI lakShmI narasimha and has references in several purANa-s like skanda. The purANa-s say that on seeing the beauty of shUrpAlaya, the tears of joy of Lord paraShurAma that fell on the ground here gave birth to a peepal tree (ashvattha). Also, mother bhAgIratI is said to have come here every day to give ‘shUrpa dAna’ (morada-bAgiNa) to a brahmin to get rid of her sins. Hence the name ‘shUrpAlaya’. The place is also referred to as ‘dakShiNa-kAshi’, owing to the shiva temples and 8 tIrtha-s around the area. The village of Shurpali was the ‘tapObhUmi’ of shrI yAdavAryaru. There is also a prANadEvaru installed by shri shri 1008 shrI vidyAdhIsha tIrtharu in the temple. shrI shrI 1008 shrI vishvaprasanna tIrtharu, jr pontiff of shrI pejavara mutta visited Jamakhandi on 29th January 2010 and Shurpali on 30th January on the occasion of mAgha shuddha pUrNimA (bharata huNNime). The events included a grand welcome of pUjya svamiji by the enthusiastic and hospitable residents of Jamakhandi, enlightening discourses by svamiji, evening ‘toTTilu pooje’, pAda pooje of svamiji in several homes of devout families in both Jamakhandi and Shurpali, mAgha-snAna and danDa snAna in kRuShNA river, smasthAna pUja at shUrpAlaya and relishing tIrtha-prAsada which included many north Karnataka delicacies .
