Sri Hari vAyu gurubhyo namaH,

Dear KrishNa bhaktas,

Here are the upcoming   Ekadashi details.  The information comes from Sri Ram

Ramachandran and Sri Yogeendra Bhat. Some of you have asked for explanation of

why NY/NJ/CT and DC areas have different Ekadashi observation rules.  This is

explained below.

Smartavyam satataM vishNuH,

Regards,

Vasu Murthy

========================0=================================0===

According to  USA Calendar:

Ekadashi is as follows:

For NJ, NY and East of of these (places like CT) March 11th.  Dwadashi parane on

March 12th before 9:05 AM.

For rest of USA excluding PST it is Double Ekadashi because of athiriktha

Dwadashi. Ekadashi upavasa on March 10th and Match 11th and Dwadshi parane is on

March 12th before 9:05 AM EST/ 8:05 CST and 7:05 MST.  This includes

Washington DC and all areas south of DC in the East coast.

For West coast(PST), Ekadashi is on March 10th and Dwadashi parane on March

11th.  (NO SRAVANA DWADASHI Upavasa.  Does not meet all conditions). However,

there is Harivasara till 10:02 AM.  So Parane after 10:02 AM on Thursday.

India:

Double Ekadashi.  March 11th and March 12th.  Dwadashi parane on March 13th.

Double because March 12th is Sravana Dwadashi.

Explanation of why NJ/NY and DC have different EkAdashi schemes:

nirNaya on is based on the thithi at Sun rise at the respective places.  Another

rule is that Thiti begins and ends at the same instant across the world.

For example March 10th is EKadashi is the thithi across the board.  However on

March 11th, the ekadashi thithi ends at 6:21 AM and Dwadashi starts at 6:21 AM

at all places in the East coast.  Now the sunrise at NJ is 6:19 AM and at CT is

6:16 AM and at DC is 6:29 AM.

Based on this, the thithi for March 11th at NJ/NY/CT is still Ekadashi because

it is Ekadashi thithi at sun rise in NJ/NY/CT.  In DC, it is Dwadashi  on March

11th because by sun rise time in DC, Dwadashi thithi has started.   The thithi

on March 12 th is also Dwadashi for DC, NY, NJ, CT etc.

NirNaya for NJ/NY/CT:

Since March 10 & March 11th are Ekadashi for NJ/NY/CT, according to tradition,

they need to observe Ekadashi on the second day ONLY and hence for them it is

March 11th and dwadashi on March 12th. According to Sri Yogeendra Bhat, there is

no pramaNa for this,  but this is based on tradition.

NirNaya for Washington DC and areas south and West:

For DC  March 10th is Ekadashi.  March 11th Dwadashi and also March 12th will be

Dwadashi.  According to the pramANa given in  Sri Krishnamrutha Maharnava by

srimadAcharya, this situation is called athiriktha Dwadashi. We are supposed to

observe Ekadashi on the first Dwadashi also along with Ekadashi on March 10th.

So, this becomes double Ekadashi for DC.  Regular Dwadashi parane on MArch 12th.
