It was K’ang’s way to meditate several times daily, and on this day he

lowered his old body to the ground, seeming not to notice the small

sharp stones that were everywhere on the mountain where he lived.

He, and his companion, an old white cat, pristine in his grooming,

Had been together for many years, neither dependant on the other, but

sharing a mutual respect.
