Re: James/The Pope's Apology to the Gnostics

Dear James,

After reading the attached dispatch again I've come to the

conclusion that it's almost certainly a fake, probably

intended as a parody in the style of the Onion

Dear Laura:

Yes, it was probably an embellishment by whoever originally posted it.

I found it at alt.religion.gnosis. I haven't been able to read complete

text of the Pope's speech yet, just excerpts, but the consensus so far from

everyone is that the Pope was vague about specific groups and probably

wouldn't have given an itemized list of gnostic sects. Glad I posted though,

as it's stimulated some interesting conversations! It was a fantasy, but it

was a good fantasy. And the Pope did mention the shabby treatment of

supposed " heretics, " which is a refreshing change in attitude. It will be

interesting to read the whole speech if it becomes available.

Hi James,

It's on the Vatican website at this URL:

http://www.vatican.va/jubilee_2000/jubilevents/events_day_pardon_en.htm

When you get to that page, look especially at the " homily "

and the " universal prayer. " The bulk of his quoted remarks

have come from those two portions of the service.
