Guest guest
Hello, Okay, I think that answer was pretty good. But, I have a couple more questions if you don't mind. First, well, they mentioned about stilling the mind. To free it from any mental activity. Is watching it and stilling the mind the same thing? Next, how do you still the mind? Next, what bennifits does watching the mind have. Thank you. Blessed be Leaf
Guest guest
Hi Leaf, I think you'll find the answer to these three questions if you try watching your mind as continuously as you can over a period of, say, 45 minutes. You probably won't be able to do it continuously for that length of time. What usually happens is, you watch for a few seconds, then you forget to do it for a few minutes and start thinking about something -- you go into a daydream without noticing. Then you suddenly remember you're supposed to be watching -- you suddenly realize you've been daydreaming -- so you start watching again. As this process goes on, during the 45-minute session, the mind has less of a tendency to forget to be watchful. Or, to put it another way, the mind stops going out of itself so much. Or, still another way, it gets quieter. The benefits will be apparent, I think, during the rest of the day. One other thing: when people say "stilling the mind," I guess many of them are translating into English the famous second sentence of the most famous book ever written about Yoga, Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. That sentence says, "Yoga is the stopping (stilling) of the motions of the mind."
