Guest guest
Over the last few months we've received a few spam emails here that advertise pornographic websites. I think the problem is likely to get worse as time goes on. If you're reading this message in the archive you won't see the spam, because it has been deleted. We had a discussion here of what to do about the problem. (This discussion is also missing from the archive because some of the messages quoted the offensive spam emails, so I deleted the thread.) The discussion revealed that some members find the spam extremely offensive, so I've decided to make the following changes to try to prevent spam in both current messages and the archive. -- From now on, new membes will be moderated. That means that their messages will be reviewed by a moderator before publishes the messages in the group. Once it becomes apparent that a new member has not joined in order to advertise a pornographic website, he or she will be given normal publishing privileges. -- All spam emails that are already in the archive will be deleted. (I just deleted a few that appeared over the last few months, and I'll check more carefully later to see if I missed any). -- Rob, in moderator mode

Guest guest
Hi Era, > your moderator is unique > you deleted my 6 messages mostly to Alton > they were not porno spams This reminds me of the old saying: " Be careful what you ask for, because you may get it. " I deleted the whole thread for two reasons: (a) all the messages, including yours, contained the subject line from the original spam, and I thought that this was as spammy and as sexually explicit as anything in the body of the spam; and (b) the easiest way for me to remove quoted portions of the spam from the archive, as I had been asked to do, was to delete the whole thread. All you need to do, if you want to continue part of that earlier conversation, is repost portions of the old thread in a new one. That's exactly what you've done here. Guest guest
Rob: Can you promise to tell us at least the subject of the messages that you wont repost on the group and how do we know that you wont get off on some of them. I mean is that being "spiritual" LOL. Love, Alton
Guest guest
Dear Alton, > Can you promise to tell us at least the subject of the messages > that you wont repost on the group. Use your own judgment. Members of the group were disturbed by the original spam and somebody asked me to delete quotations from it. The subject field in this case was a quotation. > how do we know that you wont get off on some of them. I mean is > that being "spiritual" LOL. I did this because I was asked to. Guest guest
Dear Rob: Is this the democratic way? Shouldn't we ask all the members for their views about moderating new members? Or at least those who have a view on that. I had some of my posts moderated on the Pagan group that Deb belongs to and they did not even tell me that they did not like what I was posting. So I left that group. I wasn't all that serious about some of the issues in my post below. Just my weird sense of humor getting the way again. Guest guest
Dear Alton, > Is this the democratic way? Shouldn't we ask all the members > for their views about moderating new members? We just went through a long discussion here in which it was clear that the consensus is to to exclude spam advertisements for porn websites from the group. The least-intrusive way to accomplish this is to moderate the first message from each new member. If it's a spam advertisement for a porn website, I'll delete the message so it never appears in the group. If it's any other kind of message, I'll click "okay" and promote the member to non-moderated membership. I have no intention of using this to censor the content of people's messages to suit my own notions. The only purpose is to exclude advertisements for porn websites. > I had some of my posts moderated on the Pagan group that Deb > belongs to and they did not even tell me I'm not going to do anything with real posts except click "okay" and promote the person to full membership. I'm only going to use this to exclude spam advertisements for porn websites. > Is this the democratic way? Shouldn't we ask all the members > for their views about moderating new members? If you're not satisfied by what I've written above then of course, discuss it further or do anything else you like. I'll do whatever the group wants about these spam messages. If it was up to me, I would just ignore them and not bother with any of this, but I'm trying to accomodate what other people want. > I wasn't all that serious about some of the issues in my post below.
