Only in the mind does all this arise. In advaita, no differences. All is the

Self. The ego makes the differences.

So when you are stripped of all knowing...

then what?

I, Noumenon, am the awareness, not the cognizer.

The cognizer and the cognized are arisen by the consciousness.

So, All Manifestation is the consciousness, the universal consciousness.

But the consciousnes or the universal consciousness is appeared from "I(Noumenon)".

I, Noumenon, am only the witness.

If consciousness is not there the Absolute cannot know Itself - There is nothing but the Absolute - therefore no witnessing. the Witness spontaneously arises when(or where) there is the consciousness. 'Phenomenal I(Consciousness)' arises with the big-bang(what we call in physics),notional though it be, 'Noumenal I(Absolute)' is always present as the witness in this world. When the universe disappears, the Consciousness also disappears;but the Absolute remains(without witness) - IT(Absolute) is unaware of itself without the Consciousness.- Bill Rishel Nisargadatta Friday, May 30, 2003 1:28 PMRE: Who am I?But even the Witness eventually dissolves,Beyond, Beyond, Beyond. Think you're bein' cute don't ya Pete? : )

Because it's a *reasoned argument*.

If... then...

Knowing doesn't pursuade by reason.

Knowing just reflects the gleam of Truth.

If "The Absolute cannot know itself", it is

not by reasoning that that is realized from the premise

"Consciousness is not there".

What can be said about the Absolute except *from*

the Absolute?

Assuming we know what we mean by 'Absolute'.

Very interesting Adan.

I've never thought of desire that way...

Intuitively it makes sense but...

Could you elaborate?

Desire, strong or otherwise, is a movement in

consciosness, a wave or an upheaval of sorts,

however gross or subtle, that, when satisfied,

comes to rest in its own extinction. Our sexual

desire leads to courtship; successful courtship

leads to sex; sex consummated leads to orgasmic

bliss; and bliss is desire extinguished. Or, if

you're into chocolate cake, it's even simpler.

Desire satisfied is desire extinguished.

So simple, I see.

I was thinking you meant something like its

own " complete " extinction, but I guess that

is undefinable and meaningless anyway.

Yes. The satisfaction adheres in desire's

(temporary) cessation, rather than possession

of the desired object.

So, rather than 'taste of bliss,'

perhaps 'taste of equanimity'?

How does the answer add up to Zero, nothing?

What happens after the answer adds up to Zero, nothing, and I am

Everything; when I am Everything what goes on, what is done?

Dear Lewis:

What goes on is exactly what is going on now: nothing. What were you

before you were conceived in the womb? Who were you, then, Lewis?

The question is answered clearly - What goes on is exactly what is

going on now: nothing.

fuzzie: What were you before you were conceived in the womb?

Lewis: There are no words.

fuzzie: Who were you, then, Lewis?

Lewis: There are no words.

Who Am I?

Who am I is the relevant question.

Am I my fingernails? No. Take them away. I can still live.

Am I my hair? No. Take them away. I can still live.

Am I my arms and legs? No, Take them away. I can still live.

Am I my face? No. Much of it can be taken away and I can still live.

Am I my teeth? No? Take them away. I can still live.

And on and on until there comes a point when no more can be taken away

and you will die.

When you die there is no more question and no one to ask it.

Do you think that when you die there still exists an I am?

Is the sense of I am related to the body?

Is there still a spirit or soul that continues to ask, who am I ?

If there is no spirit or soul who is there to ask, who am I ?

Is the I am all of human life that exists after your death?

Is the I am all of life on the surface of the earth?

Is the I am all of planetary and cosmic existence?

Is the I am all of substance?

Is the I am Infinite space?

Is the I am all that is?

Is the I am a process and activity that has no nam?

Is who am I a question with an answer?

When you stop asking the question,

Have you realized the answer?

For those who never asked the question,

Are they living the answer?

Hi Elvira,

I'm a new member here myself...

so speaking for myself...

that's a clear yes...

the i consciousness of myself...

and the i consciousness of other selves...

is the same in every regard...

be it now conscious of self or not.

Who am I?

My name is Elvira Caldwell; age 32 ; divorced ; one child (boy) ; I live

in Switzerland in a small town called Brüttisellen.

My knowledge of Nisargadatta is rather limitted, so I am having to ask a few

questions more then who I am, if I didn't answer that one already. :)))

As a new member of this group, I'm wondering if everyone uses the

same definitions of I am, awareness and consciousness as Nisargadatta uses.

As Anita Firely said in one of her talks years ago, " During the

break, looking into each others' eyes, I realized that the same

consciousness that I was looking at was looking at me. "

That consciousness is to me the " I am " consciousness that Nisargadatta talks

about, be it now aware of it or not.

Agreed?
