Guest guest
Eremon, Thanks for the paraphrase from Alan Watts. Like Nisargadatta Maharaj, Alan Watts is one of the greatest spiritual teachers of the 20th century. I would highly recommend his tapes. He's a gifted speaker. There is a radio station in the Boston area that plays his tapes on Saturday mornings. My favorite idea from Watts is about the meaning of life. If I may also paraphrase, he said something like, " What's the meaning of a Mozart symphony? " Who can blame the dualistic mind for searching meaning in artful creations? It's simply in its programming to do so. As Rumi says, the story of lovers has no end...a heart which wine cannot console. Guest guest
In 'Be Here Now' Alan Watts presented an idea, paraphrased here... Imagine a supreme being, author of anything and everything, including inventing the impossible. In a creative moment a machine appears capable of create all-that-is automatically. On the machine there is a large red button labeled 'Surprise!' Thenceforth the supreme being leans constantly upon the button of surprise. -eremon > ~ If this means you are allowing for surprises, well Good News! > >Okay...Xan...Take Me to One Place there is Silence in this Universe > >and I Will Agree with You...! > > > ~ David... Guest guest
Ram Dass wrote Be Here Now. M.C. Escher made pictures of impossibility. I made the supreme being that made the machine. You made the surprise button that made me make the supreme being to push the button. Alan Watts had a nice smile and a pleasant voice, and funny ideas about how the command " be spontaneous " was the source of double binds which were the basis of Zen teachings, (a double bind much like an automatic " surprise " machine), who claimed to be an entertainer who would speak about Tao now, and how. Thanks for your welcoming of me to infinity! Guest guest
I Pushed a Button...I Know not Why...Maybe I'll Push It Again and See if I Can Turn It Off... Last Night I worked On My Clothes Dryer...It was Kind of Working Until I Worked On It...Now...Now...when I Push the Button Everything Comes on but the Flame of Life that Allows One to Wear Dry Clothes...! Guest guest
As someone else has pointed out, the book by Alan Watts that this came from was not 'Be Here Now,' which, of course is by Ram Dass. I believe this anecdote appeared in Watt's 'The Book on the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are. " Sorry for the misinformation. > Hur: Thanks for the paraphrase from Alan Watts. Guest guest
Indeed! Just get your buns back here so we can properly consider such penultimate questions as 'who is there to let go,' and 'what is there to let go of?' Remember now, you can always 'let go' later.
