Guest guest
El: Melody, you missed it.Try it again.I thought you wanted to solve the Koan. Melody: I'm happy to further share with you my observations, El, but let me offer this one first: Misunderstandings often occur when one person presumes to know the intent or mind of another. Not only does it lead to misunderstandings, when offered with the rather authoritarian tone as above (and if a power relationship has not been agreed upon....such as parent/child, or teacher/student), it inspires constriction, a self-defended stance, and tends to close down channels of communication - no matter how helpful the implied intention. Getting back to your concern about my response, though - I was just stating the obvious, El. And I'm happy to elaborate on it a bit: Absent the self-referencing "me"; hours pass by "in no time" at all. A sense of time exists only when a "me" exists to experience its passage. For most, an example of this happens 'like clockwork' every single night. How many times have we fallen asleep in the afternoon, only to awaken an hour later .....and not know if it was morning or night? This was a favorite trick of my son's during long car rides. He'd sleep, and find that it seemed as if we would get there much quicker. :-)) Of course, dreamless sleep is a rather unconscious way of dropping the sense of 'me' .... but a sense of time stops nonetheless.
