I just wanted to add that I believe in UG's case, it's his way of pointing to the fact that ultimately, sages and gurus are of no help, but one must 'turn to oneself' completely and courageously (he doesn't say this outright, but that's what I believe he's 'pointing to'). Of course, Nisargadatta says this too, but more gently. Perhaps that's what you're pointing to as well... if so... well, I've been known to not only be incorrect, but drastically and totally off- base. In fact, I've made a complete fool of myself on countless occasions :-). I can smile about it now, because I have no 'investment' in ego anymore -- in fact, I'm sure the days of appearing the fool are far from over... ;-).
