Nisargadatta on personality

Dear List,

 

Some " personality issues " have come up on the NondualitySalon list

lately (I have d due to lack of interest in these dramas),

and so this seems like an appropriate time to discuss personality

and 'what lies beyond it'.

 

From " direct experience " (although Nisargadatta requires no

verifications), I'll say unequivocally that 'the person' is an

illusion, a sort of clinging or attachment to a 'self image'.

 

It's easy to go beyond the notion of 'personality', and in fact

beyond that is " Unconditional Fulfillment, " like an ocean of bliss

and Fulfillment without boundaries. This is 'direct experience here'

after following Nisargadatta's instructions ( " just being " as much as

possible) since early 1999 and if it is 'here', it can easily

be 'with you' too. There is nothing but " Understanding " -- and " it

will find you " if you are not distracted with other things, and it

will 'consume you' utterly.

Q: Why do you keep on dismissing the person (vyakti) as of no

importance? Personality is the primary fact of our existence. It

occupies the entire stage.

 

Maharaj: As long as you do not see that it is mere habit, built on

memory, prompted by desire, you will think yourself to be a person --

living, feeling, thinking, active, passive, pleased or pained.

Question yourself, ask yourself, 'is it so? 'Who am I'? 'What is

behind and beyond all this? And soon you will see your mistake. And

it is in the very nature of a mistake to cease to be, when seen.
