Guest guest
Dear List, What is the 'relationship' between Maharaj and Balsekar, really? Did Maharaj 'sanction' Balsekar as his 'successor'? Sometimes I sense a vague antagonism toward Balsekar by those who have 'benefitted' from Nisargadatta's words, and it seems understandable. Who is this guy, he's making money from books... is he 'connected' with Maharaj except " in his own mind? " Anybody can 'declare themselves' the successor of a Guru, or 'everyone else' declares it. Like in the case of U.G. Krishnamurti... even though he clearly 'dislikes' J. Krishnamurti (to put it delicately) somehow he is put as " JK's only true disciple " or some such nonsense. Thanks for " the real story " (whoever knows), Tim

I read an interview with him a while ago in " What is Enlightenment? " magazine, but without further investigation I don't think I can say how good he is or, even, if I think he's not that good a teacher. The thing that got me here was your idea of Balsekar being 'sanctioned' as a 'successor' to Nisargadatta. I don't think that can be done. The Maharaj may have made him a successor to the nav-nath sect, much like someone succeeds another in a bequeathment in a will, but that hardly makes Balsekar Englightened, does it? We are all the successors to Nisargadatta. There are only Enlightened people or unenlightened people. Would you say that an unenlightened Balsekar can give better instruction than an Enlightened Omkara? Nisargadatta was of interest to people because he was an Enlightened being - not because he as a Guru in the nav-nath sect. Having an interest in who came before him or who follows after him may be usefull for background information but what are the motives? It strikes me that this could be the " authority " problem in wanting to find a " Guru " without - another delay to finding the Holy Spirit within. Balsekar will have to stand on his own - as an Enlightened being or interesting teacher. Being a 'successor' to Nisargadatta really doesn't mean anything when we're discussing a state of Enlightenment, does it? Kind regards, Stephen
Guest guest
Balsekar was a translator for the English speaking seekers who came to see Maharaj. I don't believe Maharaj appointed any 'successors', but he did acknowledge Ramesh's awakening. The following is from Balsekar's " Consciousness Speaks " : " One morning when I was waiting for Maharaj to get ready for me to take him out for the usual car ride, he was in a particularly calm mood and he said, 'I'm glad it's happened.' He also knew at that time that 'Pointers' was coming out, so he said, 'I'm glad it's happened. It's not just one book. Several books will come out. And what the books will say will not be a parroting of what I have said. How it will come about, I won't know. Even you won't know'. " Q. When you were talking about the experience of enlightenment, you spoke about Maharaj and that particular moment when he said, " So it's happened. " Was there a particular moment when you made that comment to yourself, " So it's happened? " " After a day or two, when I came back to normal, physically, then I knew it had happened, and there was no doubt at all. Quite frankly, I did not feel any need for certification from Maharaj, but when it did come it was welcome. But the basic fact is that I did not need any certificate from anybody. Guest guest
Oh yeah, the body/mind gets " Enlightened. " Enlightenment is an " experience. " That's a hoot, indeed. Great way to attract seekers, I suppose... doesn't do much for 'credibility'... Just an observation -- sometimes, 'what can't be spoken' gets spoken a bit too often :-). Truly, not a word can be said... but I suppose something has to be there to encourage " earnestness. " Either that, or Balsekar is out for fame, fortune and plenty of book sales. Who knows, and really, who cares. Thanks for the post, I suppose 'I' was the one who stirred up the bee's nest here. Wonder where they'll fly? :-). Cheers, Tim Nisargadatta, tedhill@t... wrote: > > Balsekar was a translator for the English speaking seekers who came > to see Maharaj. I doubt that he needs the money. andrew > Thanks for the post, I suppose 'I' was the one who stirred up the > bee's nest here.
