How are you benefited by this harsh self-talk?

"You do not want 'truth'. You want the confirmation of your beliefs, you want somebody to agree with you and affirm what you already know, so that you may "feel better" in your misery. You will go on seeking until you find someone who will confirm your beliefs, and then you shall willingly become the abject slave of that one who merely and simply agrees with you -- at least until he changes his mind. The mere words "I love you" will set you to tears and slavery, because you do not love yourself, because you do not even know you exist. You will not take the cure, but you will gladly take the morphine -- and when or if it stops working, you will move on to another doctor. So long as the pill remains sweet, so long as your personal beliefs are confirmed, affirmed and 'loved', you will listen. Otherwise -- your ears are closed, your eyes squeezed shut, your mind hardened and your head thrust deep in the sand."... Omkara ...

Dear Skye,

In "I Am That" Nisargadatta couples his chides with a suggested alternative. If I recall correctly, he also advises those who are extremely self-critical to be more loving of themselves. The cynical tone of the diatribe in question strikes me as quite dissimilar to that of Nisargadatta. Of course, the two authors also differ radically in their personal aspects.

Thomas asked Omkara: How are you benefited by this harshself-talk?Dear Thomas,Nisargadatta spoke just as harshly if not more so, and not tobenefit himself. What tells the tale is not Omkara orNisargadatta, but ones own reaction to what is said. If uponsuch reflection one sees the meaninglessness of ones conditionalbehaviour, therein lies the benefit.SkyeOmkara wrote: "You do not want 'truth'.
