Years ago, I read that someone asked Alan Watts why he was still an

alcoholic. He was (supposed) to have replied: " Why should I deny

the experience of alcoholism to all-that-is? " :-) a.m.

LOL :-). Nisargadatta's answer to why he still smoked was that he

only smoked when his sons brought them (also he said " the body has

retained a few old habits " ).

Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche (a famous Tibetan monk) was also a *very*

heavy drinker, I'm sure there are plenty of other examples (I think

Osho/Rajneesh took quite a few pills :-).

Yeah, right ;-)

I thoroughly enjoyed Watts's

contributions ... but:

Can anyone spell " rationalization? "

Here are some useful answers

for next life, if he's not

perpetuating a " spiritual identity " :

" I don't feel like quitting. "

" Mind your own business. "

" I like it too much to stop. "

Another story is that he said, " I don't like

myself when I'm sober. "

Maybe the stress of maintaining a

spiritual persona brought out

his compulsivity? Just a guess.

And really --who knows?

As the ultimate explanation

of any thing is the explanation of

everything, it is " no explanation " ...

" 'All-that-is' having experiences "

as an explanation for " this " ? I don't

think so ... ;-)

Nope -- no " all-that-is " that is

having various experiences.

Laughing!

Love,

Dan

Folks -- there is no

such thing as " a spiritual person " ...

Funny watching " spiritual persons " find

various ways to answer these

questions. ;-)

What were the Bendictine monks'

explanation for inventing

" Benedictine " ?

Maybe: If Jesus changed water

to wine, who am I to object?

LOL!

Depends on what he meant by " all-that-is " :-). I didn't get the idea

he meant to say " All-that-is " is having experiences, nor did I get

the idea he was attempting to explain " this. "

Rather, he was offering an explanation for drinking alcohol. Seen

here, any explanation would suffice -- even " go ask your mother " ;-).

What choice do they have? They are labeled as " spiritual persons "

(often for purposes of 'teaching') and thus tend to respond " as

spiritual people. " Their responses are reflections of the

expectations of the questioner(s).

Heh. Sounds like him!

I love his writings and talks, but admit his experiences with

initiating his teenage sons to LSD kinda bugged me.

I have a tape, " Alan Watts Teaches Meditation " in which it is very

obvious (in parts) that he is inebriated!

Probably something like, " We can't get any Yukon Jack in these
