Guest guest
Ah, been away from computer for several days, interesting material appeared upon my return. As to the beedie's, in one of the into's to 'I Am That' is a thourgh narrative of Maharaj's early life making and selling same. -A quick story for morning coffee/tea. A regular event after the morning talks was for the Westerners to light up beedies and go to the cafe around the corner for copious amounts of tea. Durng one session my mind was wandering in anticipation of that smoke and discusion. About that time Maharaj said 'I am speaking to you about knowledge of yourselves that can not be heard anywhere else, and all of you are thinking about beedies!' Upon discussion later almost all admited we had been. As per reactions to others 'gurus', Maharaj was quite respectfull of most that were brought up in discussion, especialy Ramana Maharshi, Sai Baba, Mukananda and his guru. Maharaj enjoyed relating stories of the guru of Mukananda. The one exception was Rashneesh (Osho now?). Several of his followers made there way to aharaj. He would immediately ask them up 'to the mat'. After some hard questioning they would quickly depart. One Canadian returned several times with discussion with Maharaj and others. He was to leave India about the same time as I. When he came to pay his final respects as he was leaving, Maharaj asked, " do you now know who you are? " " No, I am even more confussed. " Maharaj, " Did your guru not tell you who you are? " " no. " " Before you leave you must find out who you are. I cannot tell you, only he who is Your guru can tell you that. You must go back to Rashneesh and demand he tell you Who You Are. If he will not,or can not tell you, you will know he is not your true guru. Then come back here and I will tell you. " Often have I wondered that outcome. John -- Nisargadatta wrote: >

John Hi John, Guru conspiracies always intrigue me... Some of the same gurus u mentioned that Maharaj endorsed, have now been exposed as tricksters. Osho has always been considered controversial, but his message is much closer to the truth than many of the others. I'm also surprised that Maharaj mentions that the guy's guru (including himself) should tell him - who he is -. This " answer " , if there is one, has to be found by the " aspirant " in quiet contemplation, by himself and for himself. No outside agency can help. Telling someone " That thou art " or " I am " is merely inspirational, any fool can do that. So what did Maharaj really mean ? ~Dave

This knowledge is indeed the pivotal point around which moves everything. It is the crucial truth. And the apperception of this truth arises only from intense personal experience, not from a study of religious texts, which according to Maharaj, are nothing but 'hearsay.' Taking his stand on the bedrock of incontrovertible facts and totally discarding all assumptions and speculations, he often address a new visitor in the following words: " You are sitting there, I am sitting here, and there is the world outside -- and, for the moment, we may assume that there must be a creator, let us say God. These three/four items are facts or experience, not 'hearsay.' Let us confine our conversation to these items only. Guest guest
Dave, Does an apple fly by an apple tree and decide to attach itself to it? No? Did you fly by the universe and decide to place yourself here? -mort Nisargadatta, " D. Hi Dave - forget it!!!!! the gurus he mentioned are definitely real, loving and helpful teachers. But you really should have a look at those people who " exposed " these gurus as " tricksters " - then you will understand, what psychological processes are driving them! Very interesting! Its definitely necessary to make up ones mind for oneself - and not reapeating opinions. To be quite honest., about 99.9 % of my evaluation was from reading stuff published or authorized by these 'gurus' and the rest from a critical examination of the findings of other reputable investigators. I don't know 'bout you, but being street-wise these days makes good sense to balance the perspective or as they say, keep the head on the shoulders. For argument probably it's a good time to review the mental processes whereby the intellect arrives at certain practical conclusions (assuming there is no other faculty beyond the intellect). One tool that I find handy and has been established for validation is 'hypothesis testing', -Something is true until evidence points otherwise- and not the other way : guilty until proven innocent. ~dave
