Relativity vs. Objectivity

There may be something of interest here.

Check out this prattling between these

two dudes, Protagoras and Socrates of

ancient Greece. Incidentally, Socrates

was reputed to be the wisest among Western

men,at that time.

 

P(rotagoras) : Truth is relative, it's only a matter of opinion.

 

S(ocrates): You mean that truth is mere subjective opinion,

mental jugglery ?

 

P: Exactly. What is true for you is true for you only, and

what is true to me is true for me only.Truth is subjective.

 

S: Do you really mean that ? That my opinion is true by virtue

of it being my opinion ?

 

P: Indeed, Mr Socrates.

 

S:My opinion is - Truth is absolute, not opinion, and that you

Mr Protagoras are absolutely in error.Since this is my opinion,

then you must grant that it is true according to your philosophy.

 

P: And you are quite correct, Mr Socrates.
