I only know one real Christian mystic personally ---

Brother David Steindl-Rast --- and he has a

teacher. & nbsp; The need for a living teacher is

definitely a Buddhist teaching, at least among the

Tibetan Buddhists I am aware of... in fact, the

& quot;root guru & quot; is a big part of that

teaching.

That is not to say that the ultimate locus of

authority is outside of oneself. & nbsp; However,

practical experience and empirical observation over

many years (I've been at this now for 30 or so) shows

that people who don't have a living teacher, in

whatever tradition or lineage they feel most

comfortable, just don't change much. & nbsp; If

& quot;life as teacher & quot; were sufficient, there'd

be a lot more enlightened beings on earth and it would

be a very different place. & nbsp; The underlying

reality of the soul's inherent wisdom is

unquestionable, but much of the task of the spiritual

path is of removing the veils between our subjective

identity and the inner reality. & nbsp; The teacher is

merely one who helps you stay on track, just as one

occasionally needs help interpreting a map when

traveling in a foreign country. & nbsp; You may need

that help a lot or only a little --- but when you need

it, you really need it.
