Guest guest
I have a friend of a friend who's rather strange. Although she's vague I think she believes she's channeling Ramana, Jesus, etc. The thing is, she's rather intelligent, educated, well spoken and fun to speak to. Sometimes I talk to her on the phone, mostly listening. The other day I was chatting with my friend about her. My friend said he's also giving her the benefit of doubt that she's the real thing. The real thing? I said to my friend that she's as real as you, me and Ramana. This made me realize how Jesus, Buddha and all the messiahs, prophets were mentally ill. When a wave worships the persona of the Ocean, we call it religion. When a wave claims s/he's the only one who's the real thing, I call that mental illness. When a wave believes another wave is the real thing, not himself, I call it delusion. We affix divinity to a wave and worship it although that wave is as helpless as us. Jesus could not even save himself from the stronger waves in the form of roman soldiers and the jewish establishment. It amazes me how along the evolutionary ladder, such mental illnesses, delusions passed on in large numbers because these particular genetic traits were somehow efficient at survival. We don't normally call these conditions mental illness because belief in god, saints, messiahs, prophets are so common. This is also what makes Advaita so special. Not because the ego can be tricked into believing itself as the Self but a good Advaita guru elegantly guides the adoring seeker to the Ocean of Being and explains over and over again that there is no difference between himself and the seeker. hur
Guest guest
A wave is also the ocean. Jan FWD: [sufiMystic] curtain of the world 'If it is said that I am concealed by the existence of the world, then who is it that blossoms in the form of the world? Can a red jewel be concealed by its own luster? Does a chip of gold lose its goldness if turned into an ornament? Does a lotus lose itself when it blossoms into so many petals? When a seed of grain is sown & grows into an ear of corn, is it destroyed or does it appear in its enhanced glory? So there is no need to draw the curtain of the world away in order to have my vision, because I am the whole panorama.' Guest guest
Here is Balsekar with a more direct quote: " The individual does not finally merge with his original nature any more than a wave merges with water. They were not different to begin with. A wave is nothing more than the shifting shape of the water itself. It is not a question of joining separate things but of the abandonment of something inessential and superficial, the false identity of a separate individual entity.
