Guest guest
I got this quote from the video: Awaken to the Eternal Nisargadatta Maharaj: A Journes of Self-Discovery There can be no consciousness without awareness. There can be awareness without consciousness, as in deep sleep. Awareness is absolute. Consciousness is relative to its content. Consciousness is always *of* something. Consciousness is partial and changeful. Awareness is total, changeless, calm and silent. Nisargadatta Maharaj If you haven't seen the video I recommend it. It has footage of NM speaking (with translation) as well as commentary by numerous disciples such as Jack Kornfield and Jean Dunn. -Bill

Keep in mind that people use the terms 'consciousness' and 'awareness' loosely. But per Nisargadatta there is quite a distinction between consiousness and awareness. Note: the books " Prior to Consciousness " and " Consciousness and the Absolute " treat this subject much more clearly than " I Am That " . My interpretation of Nisargadatta re consciousness and awareness: Consciousness = I Am = God. Meditation on I Am (the *feeling* I Am) brings one to realize identity with Consciousness itself, which is God. Nisargadatta emphasizes this as the first step. But he talks of going beyond the " I Am " , that the " I Am " too is illusion. Beyond the I Am is the Absolute which he equates with awareness ( " Awareness is absolute. " ). -Bill > > > > There can be no consciousness without awareness. > > There can be awareness without consciousness, as > > in deep sleep. Awareness is absolute.
