Guest guest
Life is a series of finite experiences. Those experiences will be interpreted as either good or bad according to the desires of the subject-object entity. Generally speaking, something bad is an experience the subject-object does not desire to experience. Something good then, is an experience the subject-object does indeed desire to experience. Another way of putting it is that the root of desire lies in an entity capable of forming desires. Because, as we all know, that entity is an illusion, so too are desires....either there are no such thing as natural desires, or every desire is natural, depending on how you view the inconsistencies here. Becoming angry is the result of experiencing an experience one does not desire to experience. Having sex results from a desire for pleasure. Having a drink offered by a friend is the result of a desire not to be holier than him or her. The desire to possess a ten thousand dollar stereo system does not differ in essence to any of the above desires. I would like a ten thousand dollar stereo system because the result of such a desire would be great listening enjoyment....for me. They all stem from an entity capable of forming such desires. All desire stems from selfishness. Hmmm how about altruistic behaviour? I want to help the poor so I will give them some money. This action, might be the result of a desire to be a good person. All action and inaction stem from selfishness. Thus all desire, which manifests itself in the form of action or inaction, is the result of an independent entity we label as " I. " So you're right, desires cannot be eliminated as long as there is an independent entity enjoying or not enjoying the fruit of its action or inaction. They can only be controlled, ignored, or satisfied in this situation. They can however be eliminated if the root of their existence is eliminated. The root is me. The root is ignorance. If I am no longer, neither are my desires. Still smoking, m. _______________ Tired of spam? If that's what you hope will happen, keep hoping, but Maharaj never stopped smoking, although he claimed he had no 'me', and I believe him. The problem is even when the me drops, the body keeps secreting it's hormones which will make you feel horny, hungry, high, hostile and any other H word you can think of. And of course, after you drop the me, nicotine addiction will still grip your brain. So do it now, while you still have and I and a will or it won't happen. I was framed. Oh! I was framed I didn't do nothin wrong, but I'm always getting blamed. That about sum it up? Paraphrasing and distorting a song, the name of which I believe is called " I was framed " and can be found on the cassette " La Bamba " , m. p.s. i also heard that nisargadatta was a smoker, and it was explained to me that he said " since the body seemed to enjoy smoking why interfere? " maybe desires become laughable after the me is dropped? I dunno, but as soon as I saw the nature of my desire for the picture of that girl it immediately vanished. not sure of much, m. _______________ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus

Your cat has desires, and is not self-conscious of being anyone special} >what is everything cannot be contained in a body.> (only a certain number of apples can fit in a bucket, but a human brain can contain and unlimited amount of inf. The possible number of synectics connection in a human brain exceed the number of subatomic particles in the universe.) All these concepts, of course, are only imaginary tags for an imaginary world. The difference between what you are saying and what I'm saying is only one of intent; I write only to show that as long as people hold on to spiritual beliefs, they are holding on to a blindfold. You write to convince others of your beliefs and in so doing find reassurance that they are true. Guest guest
I find it interesting that toward the end of his life when in a great deal of pain from the cancer NM spoke of being beyond the pain. Nevertheless he continued to smoke. So how was it that he was able to ignore one kind of body signal and not another? -Bill pete seesaw [seesaw1us] Tuesday, November 12, 2002 6:57 PM Nisargadatta Re: desires > They can however be eliminated if the > root of their existence is > eliminated. Guest guest
Well, your guess is as good as mine, but I think he endured pain for the sake of remaining lucid, while he kept smoking because quitting at that point would have only add to the misery of the body.
