Books are a mirror --

Be they Maharaj books, any of them,

XXX books, ad infinitum.

If you find the need to read a book to get guidance,

an/or confirmation on this or that,

you are an ass. That is a given.

If an ass opens a book an ass looks back as him/her.

If an ass opens a book and thinks he/she sees a Sage

he/she is an even bigger ass.

I think I see where you are coming from in your email - being harsh to snap people out of a mindset of continually buying books and missing the practice, among other things, but this may be an extremist view.

If someone is exposed to the teachings via either 1 book or maybe a meeting with a true guru, and they somehow "think" they are enlightened when the enlightenment has not fully ripened (in the sense where they haven't made the full shift into the Self 100% of the time), then wouldn't your statement about not needing outside confirmation not hold water? If someone tells me, in true Advaita style, "you are already free from bondage because your ego is an illusion" and I just "fake" it and have not really grasped the meaning, then there should be some outside confirmation or denial of my "understanding." If this wasn't the case, we would have so-called gurus that really are only playing ego games to make themselves THINk they are Self-realized when they are not.

I think neither extremist views, such as the one in your email nor the reading of countless books is valid, rather there is a middle ground where you can read books, yet not _rely_ on outside people to tell you what you have or have not realized.

What is an " ass " per your terminology?

Is the term " ass " as here used a perjorative term?
