[Thus] let him go to a spiritual teacher who is > learned in the scriptures and established in Brahman. <snip> The article attempts to present Advaita within a historic perspective and state that the " reception " [by spiritual practitioners or students] of Advaita has and does undergo changes. If Advaita [nonduality, Monism, whatever] is synonymous with " WHAT IS " , then a time-line/history does not reflect how " what is " changes; it is eternal, changeless. While society and perceptions change, they do so against a changeless backdrop (actually there is no demarcation --no backdrop-- between changefulness and changelessness, there is, however, the perception of Them......that changes.....) Nonduality, understood as " what is " or " inseparability " strikes me as " harmeless enough " . It is certain Derivatives of or ways of talking about Nonduality that pose a challenge to mental poise........: " the world is Unreal " ..... " you are imaginary " ....... A point in the article is that a Brahmin had the social/intellectual preparation to Live with " the world is an Illusion " .....or put another way, the Brahmin could " practice what he preached " . This does not mean that a nonBrahmin does not Live in a world that is an illusion. The issue is what makes for the varied reaction/reception to the concept of " world is an illusion " . Does the knowledge lead to narcissism and apathy, presumptably because those nonbrahmin in society instead of taking care of business--- " sons, world and wealth " are going around proclaiming that " you are an imagination " . Can it be that the acceptance of this nondualist stuff (i.e., " world is an illusion " ) does not require corroboration by any set of behaviors/actions? ....so that I as a nonBrahmin can proclaim that " you are an imagination " and there be no consequences of that which cause me to withdraw the claim or constraint my behaviour? If I am " not the body " is that so eventhough I feel otherwise? ramblin jack
