Guest guest
Demons in Hell have also a game of inquiring into their thoughts to attain their pristine Devilhood. And so, they torment themselves churning the muck of their thinking. They don't realize that the Devil himself didn't become Lucifer by inquiring; he was born that way. Inquiring into thought is as futile as cataloging the shapes of all clouds to bring about sunshine. Pete Mail SpamGuard - Read only the mail you want. Guest guest
The story I heard was that Lucifer was once an archangel cast out of the heavenly council, not for asking questions, but for not respecting authority. He was on an ego trip, enthralled by his own beauty, & wanted to make himself out to be God. This got him defrocked, so to speak. What did Milton have him say?: " I'd rather be a king in hell than a slave in heaven " (or something to that effect). Advaita is " Luciferian " in nature, as it encourages the questioning of authority & encourages independent investigation, in general. Buddha, also, encouraged his followers not to rely on faith of any kind but to question & test everything. It was Lucifer who inspired Adam & Eve to become scientists; to observe, hypothesize, experiment & formulate. This upset God so much (apparently, God is very insecure) that he cursed them & banned them from His presence. In Manicheism, a now extinct religion, God didn't create the Devil and the Devil created man, but man retained some divine sparks. Therefore, the struggle between good and evil in his soul. According to Manicheism the universe is a battleground between the forces of darkness and the forces of light. Light, they predicted, will eventually win, but could we place any faith in their prediction, since they failed to foresee their own demise. Guest guest
There weren't too many Manichees (sic) where I grew up. That's why I prefaced my email with the opening line, " The story I heard was... " Down home, there weren't too many gnostics running around. I know there are other versions of the origin of the devil. I was just having a little fun. I'm not trying to compete with anyone's favorite mythos. I don't believe in any of them, anyway. My email was more or less a parody of the situation. I have read some about the Shi'ite Muslims in the last couple of years. They are very gnostic in their beliefs, as well. They have a metaphysical system consisting of forces of light versus the forces of darkness paradigm similar to the one you recounted. The Shi'ites are a peculiar bunch. Especially, the Isma'ilis. Most Sufi tariqas are Shi'i in ideology. Ya 'Ali Madad. Guest guest
I don't believe in the Devil either. The devil is just an attempt to personalize evil. And evil seem to exist only because we have preferences. If we had not been programed to prefer pleasure and life and to fear pain and death, evil would have no meaning. Hello: Just to clarify some misinterpretations of the Bible (and theology)- " God said 'Let there be light'; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; an God separated the light from the darkness... " And God said, 'Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.' And God made the firmament and separated the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament...And God called the firmament Heaven. " Lucifer, therefore, who was an angel in Heaven, was not 'defrocked' or actively rejected. He FELL from Heaven, HE separated himself from the Good (he could not resist temptation.) It was NOT Lucifer who tempted Adam and Eve, however, it was a snake. Adam and Eve were not banished from God's presence, they were banished from Eden, which was a place of infinite abundance and pure innocence. Yes, we were given free will (preferences, as you say), but we were created in the image of God, which is pure Goodness. It is by choosing this separation from goodness that we experience knowledge of good and evil (the meaning of the devil as you say), pain, darkness and death. Sorry, my mistake. The story that you heard, concerning Lucifer being cast out of the heavenly council, and his tempting Adam and Eve, are similar to parts of stories in the Bible. I got my stories of Lucifer from poets & goths & the Golden Dawn & Jeffrey Russell Burton & Mark Twain & people like that. The Bible has no monopoly on the Devil. P.S. Cf. the Zoroastrians for further details. Nisargadatta , " ohemmanuel " <ohemmanuel> wrote: > Nisargadatta , " danananda2004 " > <danananda2004> wrote: > > I didn't misinterpret the Bible.
