Guest guest
I just came across the following guideline for meditation that I wrote for a friend several years ago. There is nothing " right " or " correct " about the following. And there are other ways of meditating. But what follows is more or less what I do when something is " up " for me. In the text I speaking of " going into " . Perhaps if I were to write this today I would say, " melt into, " or " allow yourself to dissolve into " . The words are not important. The key is that whatever " material " comes up, to go *into* into, not away from it. When the observer and the observed become one transformation happens. Bill Be in a quiet and meditative place. After completely settling and becoming tranquil, go deeply within. Meditate on: What is the Essence of the Essence? Meditate this way in an energy sense. The concept of " essence " is irrelevant here. It is about energy, about conscious, direct experience. When thoughts come up notice them but only casually. When a thought comes up let it be like a Rainbow Bread wrapper going by you on the river bank. It comes into view. It goes out of view. Whatever comes up as energy, go into it. Go into it as energy per se. Go into the essence of the energy. Go in in in this way until settling into a deep inner state where there is no this, no that, no other, no whether, no why. Absorb deeply into this and let it become established. As it becomes settled and established you will come out of the trance, wake up, and feel refreshed. After doing this practice you will find that you are less perturbed by externalities. On repetition you will find a fundamental imperturbability becoming established in you. " Other people's stuff " will become like the Rainbow Bread wrapper. They float into view, they float out of view. You remain unaffected. Actually, a core matter in this remains to be mentioned. Regarding the practice described above, when going deeply into the energy of " whatever comes up " , that energy, that deep content may sometimes be very profound and affective. The practice described is not meant to be a by-passing of such deep material. The suggestion is to truly, deeply experience this material when it comes up, but by going into the " essence of the energy " of it. Both those qualifications are important: the essence of, and the energy of. In other words, go deeper than thought, and go to the core. When some really strong material comes up it may take a lot of time and energy to go deeply into it, and in one session one may not get to the deeply established and settled state described. This is in no way a concern. This simply means that one is going through some difficult material that needs healing. The method described is very direct, powerful and effective for such healing.
