Guest guest
Today, I finally met Bicycle Lady. I had seen her around for years, always riding her bike, always riding with only one hand on the handle bar, always holding an object aloft. The first few times I saw her, she held a crucifix on high. As she saw me approaching she waved the crucifix as if sprinkling me with holy water. " Oh good " , I thought, " another religious fanatic. " Then, a few weeks later I saw her again. I expected to see the crucifix again, but this time it was something different that I could not make out. As she came closer, I saw she was holding up a hammer. As she went by she waved the hammer in my direction. " Oh good, another nut. " Next time I saw her, she was holding up a large railroad nail. I have seen her parading bibles, pictures of Jesus, and even a leather sandal. That one puzzled me a bit. What significance could a leather sandal have for the Crucifixion? Today, she was shopping at the supermarket. She is a woman in her fifties, thing, very tanned from all those bike rides. I observed her as she inspected some vegetables. She didn't look blissful, or even happy. Her features were regular, but her face was grim, her lips tight, her eyes indrawn. I approached her and said good morning. She looked at me briefly her eyes remained withdrawn. " Praise Jesus son of God, " she said, but to no one in particular. As I was leaving, I met her again in the parking lot. She straddled her bike took a large wax candle from her purse and rode away holding it aloft. I didn't notice any grocery bags. Hmm. Just another soul enjoying Christian Heaven.
