Practicing letting go

I watch the athletes in the Olymics and what good results their hard

training programmes have produced. In the same way, spiritual

practice and mind training should be able to produce good results.

For example, maybe if one is determined and practice hard, one could

actually learn how to let go. Of course, such practice requires

willpower and quite a bit of effort. The goal would be to let go of

the future until this practice becomes effortless so that the future

is dropped automatically.

One has to be very motivated in order to get good results in such

endeavor. So, why should one practice letting go of the future? The

answer is that the future is often a burden that drains a person of

energy that could be used for a heightened awareness for action in

the present moment. But most important is: No future, no worries.

What about responsibilities in the future, wouldn't letting go of the

future mean neglect of one's duties? Well, what about your

responsibilities in the present moment? You can be responsible for

things in the future or things in the present or both. When your

energy is used for responsibilities in the future, then the risk is

that you are lost in a limited thought world based on a private

biased past, and will then only react to things according to your

conditioning (your mechanical programming). Such responsibility is

the standard type of responsibility in the world, and look how the

world is today: hardly in a state of harmony. Now, since a biased

past is the only thing that normally guides us, how can we then let

go? We can look at the universe and see that there is some advanced

force that is making it all happen, and we can know intellectually

that all things are totally interconnected at least at the most

fundamental level, and that can help us have faith, to help us trust

the living moment more and more, and thereby expand one's sense of

self to embrace more of reality.
