The walking stick

The walking stick may be the first tool used by human

beings; There are even animals that use sticks for

different purposes. Something so simple and accesible

like the branch of a tree is inmensely useful: it is

used for walking, as a tool to move obstacles out of

the way, as a defence...still today, with all our

technology, the walking stick is essential for many

things. The simplest is always the most useful.

This is why, the walking stick has always been a

symbol of the power, under de form of royal sceptres

or command sticks. The walking stick is so close to

the human being that, in the riddle the Sphinx posed

to Oedipus it is said that the man with a walking

stick has “three legs”.

When we hold the walking stick in our hand, leaning it

on the floor, it forms a vertical line, a line that,

symbolically connects heaven and earth, up and down.

The walking stick is the inseparable companion of the

inner path. We will have to search our inner path. We

will have to search a walking stick inside ourselves.

Inside simplicity and humility, we will find our best

support, that will help us to move the obstacles out

of our way and will support us when the goings gets

tough. This walking stick made of simplicity will

connect us with the loftiest parts of ourselves. And,

if we persevere, in the end of the path, the walking

stick will become a sceptre, and we will be kings of

the unknown territories of the spirit.
