Guest guest
Disciple: Master, what is fear? Master: Fear is a thing. D: You mean fear is an emotion? M: No. Fear is a thing. D: What's the difference between an emotion and a thing? M: An emotion is temporary, while a thing is permanent. D: But my body, which is a thing, is not permanent. M: Your body is not a thing. Your body is an emotion. D: Surely, my arms are not emotions! M: Yes, they are. D: So, what then is a thing? Can you give an example of a thing? M: Fear is a thing. D: Fear is an emotion, and you just said that an emotion is not a thing. M: Fear is not an emotion. Fear is the only thing. D: ??? M: Fear is permanent. Understand? D: Yesterday you said that everything is impermanent! M: Yes, the paradox is: everything is impermanent, only fear is permanent. D: Then fear is the only reality! M: No. Fear is the only illusion. /AL
