In me, the darkness feels like it is in my lower chest just under low end of sternum. When I type stuff, it feels like what comes out does so at base of the neck and the fingers feel like they are connected to the base of my neck where that little indentation is. It feels like something is moving there in the neck at the base, as if the vocal cords where twanging a little and the fingers move as that sensation goes on. It feels like I am talking with my mouth shut and without moving my lips. The darkness does not seem to cause anything when I am awake. I am just on with my senses open, especially my eyes. It seems more like it responds to things and handles things and there is no movement in the appearance without it and there is always something pulling out a response. It seems that there is always something to do and I cannot stop doing stuff whatever it is. It also has movements in it, sensations that can move about and that sometimes rise under certain conditions like when I meet someone for the first time or encounter something unusual or difficult. The darkness allow me to do certain things and disallows them too. Even the smallest thing is handled by the darkness. Today, the former librarian of the institute where I work came for a visit on her way to back to Connecticut where she lives with her daughter's family. I was working on a web page and I could not stop doing it until I was released from it or more like it the doing stopped. I said to her please wait seeing there was stopping and kept on going until released from working on it. She did not seem to mind. It is like that It feels like the body is doing something and it has got to finish what it is doing to some point before it does the next thing. How this happens I do not know. It is clear that doing something gets stuck in the doing and there is a release and then another doing and this goes on all day long until I conk out. I guess thoughts come out of it like speaking comes out or anything at all. There are eyes seeing and senses sensing and darkness moving all at once. Unless there is something to do nothing is done and when things are done they are done without knowing how unless someone asks what are you doing or some other request. And the whole round of the day, that is, going out from the apartment, doing stuff outside of it and then coming back to it, just goes on and I see others in their rounds most of them do not see me with them. All the interesting things in life comes from being with others, nature and doing things since it is these that draw things out from the darkness as they go into it. Otherwise it is pretty quiet and active but nothing to do but be actively quiet. What does he mean by home? Home is everywhere for me, if home means a free being place. There are places I am unable to go and places that are not attractive or interesting and so I do not go there. Or my movements are restricted. People say oh this place is nice and so on but I never get there or feel attracted to go. I suppose he means wherever you are you do as you are and so you are always what you are and you are free in that. Maybe home equals free to him. If that is what he means, it means something to me, otherwise it makes no sense to me. I can make no sense of the words " In reality there is only the source, dark in itself, making everything shine. " If my darkness is the only source how could that be? I am one appearance of billions. My darkness is in the appearance and it seems inseparable from it. Do other people experience this darkness? My friends experience it. My family members experience it. The not knowing how things happen. But does everyone have this? Maybe he believes that everyone has it and the all together they are one thing that has no outer inner to it so that there is no blobbing of substance or whatever. This darkness is not dark like a dark thing or dark color or black darkness. It is something I cannot see with my eyes or penetrate in any way. It sometimes feels like bright light or something transparent so that you see right through it and all the stuff is in there but it is invisible. Things are cooking and it is not known how. There seems to be no way to see its operations, to fathom it, how things like speech or movement is done. It is just done. Maybe he means that the source is something that has to do with the impenetrable mystery of life and existence. You cannot get to it and it goes on and does things like moving the appearances around all the phenomena seen. Maybe he means it like a unknowable impersonal God or life force or something like that or Brahman. Lewis
Guest guest
Lewis, Happened upon this quote of Nisargadatta and thought of the 'darkness' you'd once mentioned: " In reality there is only the source, dark in itself, making everything shine. Unperceived, it causes perception. Unfelt, it causes feeling. Unthinkable, it causes thought. Non-being, it gives birth to being. It is the immovable background of motion. Once you are there, you are at home everywhere. " /o\
