Guest guest
You have desires, and they point to a positive direction while fear points in a negative direction. One would thus think that following desires is the way to live one's life in a proper way. Even ideas such as it's a good thing to have compassion, is a desire! So following desires mindfully should be the right path to peace. That's easy; the course is set, and you will sail through life with great joy and fulfillment. Nope. No sir. No mam. That is not true. And the evidence of this is abundant throughout human experience. Why? Why is not the life of the ordinary human being fulfilled? In yourself you are very sure about yourself, very adamant in pointing out that you know what is good and what is bad. How come, then, that you don't _feel_ good inside? Beneath the surface layer of your knowledge, your experiences, your sense of self, there is something that is not sure of itself at all, now is it? In fact, you are afraid of your very own nature. Why? Why is that? The answer is simple. Your desires are immature. They are not immature seen from a narrow perspective; from a narrow perspective your desires are very intelligent. But you have to look at the whole picture. You have an idea, and another person has another idea, and you believe your idea is correct while the other person has a wrong idea. You say a terrorist has bad desires. So you have the desire to destroy the terrorist who has a wrong desire. But then, do you really have a desire that is different than the terrorist? Isn't it natural to have a desire to protect oneself? No. No sir. No mam. The desire to protect yourself is a seed of violence. You create a war _within_ yourself. You protect your beliefs, and that is violence. You believe you have the right view, but how do you _feel_ inside yourself? You can only find peace when you are willing to have your desires molded, to be worked on, to be reshaped, twisted around and upgraded by nature itself. Only then will you have peace. /AL

I maybe have been a bit carried away here, but consider having one's desires unchanged compared with an openness to having those desires altered. We cannot know how these desires are going to change except for one crucial thing: we know that if our desires are going to change, then we can consciously monitor how this change is going to happen. We can tell by how we feel and how we experience the world if there is joy and liberation, if there is sat-chit-ananda, or if there is still the experience of lingering nightmare. If we are prepared for change, we even can allow a deepening of suffering emotions as an act of transformation. JUST TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS. Yes, it's important to sometimes go directly to feeling. But the interesting game here, as far as I am concerned, is to recognize, or at least fathom the possibility of, desires as something moldable. /AL > > > > I maybe have been a bit carried away here, but consider having one's > desires unchanged compared with an openness to having those desires > altered.
