Lewis, all sort of university professors make > wacky claims all the time. None of that should be believed > until widely accepted by the scientific community. Not a distortion in any way. That is how he presented it. And brain matter, gray matter was reduced Pete in some cases severely and not just compressed. And the point you mention is the point made by Lorber. These cases point to greater plasticity and non-specialized brain areas and discrete areas of the brain may not be necessary or exist as thought of currently. Could it be that what is necessary for normal activities is much much less than imagined? Full brain activity and what that entails in terms of brain area specialization, especially of the cerebral cortex is questioned. Nothing proved, just questioned. A lot of questions are raised by Lorber's study with those for and against and none are answered so what falsehood was spread? No detectable brain? A brain 4 to 5 times less than normal and even more in some cases? If you were shown these compressed brain cells where the ventricles where expanded with cerebrospinal fluid next to a brain of normal size and normal ventricles would you recognize it as a brain? Perhaps it is overstated for that dramatic punch but it is not false as Lorber points out. Have you read the relevant three page report from Science? I can send it you. It is a pdf file 922000 bytes in size. I can send it to your e-mail address if it not too large. Let me know. > > Do you teach, Lewis? Do you do research? What do > you do for a living? Oh my, should I have said that :-O Of course, I am a FUNCTIONAL SENILE LUNATIC COSMIC NARCISSIST SPREADING INSANITY. Yes. That is delicious. You figured it out. Now all you have to do is read it over and over and to get to understanding it. Note: The unconscious should not be substituted for darkness; they are not equivalent and I do not experience unconsciousness, who does? The rest will make sense (me/you etc.) and be modified as time goes. Otherwise, excellent work. Thanks, Pete! We madmen must be jacketed together! Let me help loosing your tongue/fingers. social anthropology: the branch of anthropology that deals with the social customs, beliefs, and practices of man. If you haven't found a job by the time the paycheck stops, don't forget to file for unemployment compensation. I used to investigate fraud for the agency, plus supervised a unit of quality control investigators, so maybe I could be of help, if you have questions, or problems, don't hesitate to ask me privately. At the moment, besides my own and among the other mundane things done at work, I am working with a presenting a fellow social anthropologist's work on the WWW. Her name is Anne MacKaye Chapman and is a dear friend and colleague. She worked with the Yamana and Selk'nam in Tierra del Fuego and the Tolupan and Lenca in Honduras. We are creating together a web site for her as a fellow of the institute where I work. She has been associated with the institute for over 40 years and the web site will help with getting her new 323,000 word work on the encounters of Charles Darwin and others of his time with the peoples of Tierra del Fuego, published. I pushed the idea on the institute and they agreed and I can be busy with something. The web site will be up in a month or so. Anne is in Honduras now and will back March 1st. The institute is being reorganized into something else and it will no longer function as it did it the past, if it will exist at all. The unique library, the only one of its kind in the world is being donated to New York University at this time, with one book, monograph, journal title at time being accessioned by NYU staff on the fifth floor of the building. All of us are waiting for the end of it which began in 1955. There is not much to do because of this. Whatever will happen will be done by December 2005. By that time or before, All will be taking a hike. The generosity of the board allows us a sort of unspoken severance pay without much programmed work as we everything we did before winds down to a halt. Hence, I have time on my hands. As far as new work is concerned remember one of the quotes I sent you that has to do with such things. :-) Lewis

Been on this one for ten years and was invited by the former director who was the chairman of my dissertation committee and a colleague before and at the institute. Always seems to be someone there to pull me in. No use starting now to search, I suppose. Let's see what transpires this time. Where will it come from this time? Will it come down to looking in the conventional way or as it has been all these years a floating through? I do not know. Let it be as it will be, as this always worked before. The sparrows appear, the sparrows fly free as they do. :-). Lewis
