Meditating on the ego

Imagine your ego to be a potato, a well cooked potato. Then imagine

yourself dropping this potato on the floor and then smashing it by

fiercely jumping on it going: I told you so, you fucking ego, I will

smash you to tiny pieces you fuckin' bastard!

the ego is like a nightmare, or a hallucination, made worse by our

upbringing in a civilization which is itslef based on the madness. no

matter what effort you make within the nightmare, you can't get out.

because the root of the effort is the ego itself. imho all humans are

insane - only a question of degree. only the buddha is sane.

 

but then how _does_ the ego subside? i don't know. this is why it

called the grace of God (or satguru in india). imho the best practices

are prayer and self-awareness.

 

it seems like it is a slow process - the ego dissolves slowly under

self-awareness. it is like a block of ice thrown into boiling water.

initially it seems nothing is happening - the size of the block seems

the same. but unknown to us changes are happening. and the smaller the

ice gets the faster it melts. till one day while looking for it it

cannot be found, and only the seeker remains who is confident in

itself. and with it spontaneous love, compassion and faith emerge.

these are not different from our true-nature. they _are_ our

true-nature. unless we have those " something is missing " .

I have come to believe that the ego is not actually personal, but

social. The ego is all those relations between the " me " and " the

world " . Nothing wrong with that. We need to have relations to the

context in which we operate. The problem arises I think when the

connection to the divine is lost and there is a constant struggle for

the iceblock/ " me " . This struggle indicates an imbalance, a lack of

harmony with one's own relations to the world.

 

The melting of ice you mentioned is I think a good illustration of

this disharmony and the resolution of it.

the insight you gave of the ego being a social creation is important.

there is an animal basis to the ego. all beings, even the buddha want

to stay alive. this is natural. and the animal world is " eat or be

eaten " .

 

the sad part is that our civilization is barely out of the animal

realm. it is driven by people who are deep in madness of ego. it is

based on fear and possession. to stay alive you need resources - land,

water, air, food etc. our ancestors being full of fear, grabbed all

the resources and the result was that the children who are born naked

have to struggle to survive to buy the resources to stay alive.

 

some struggle is inevitable in all life, but imho our civilization

thrives on it. in the mythological past it seems on the basis of the

myths passed to us that they were not so deep in the ego. they still

respected the mystical element of the universe. or maybe they were

closer to nature. somewhere along the line after the monotheistic

religions came along the innocence got replaced by cleverness and

control of nature - meaning denial of resources to others.

 

eg, the message to kids today is - to be happy you need toys,

cartoons, pop-tarts etc. growing up in such a society has them totally

hypnotized with the sensations and possessions.

 

for anyone to get the message that the perceiver is sufficient in

itself - not many minds are able to get that subtlety today. but even

then for the perceiver to be united with its vehicle (the body), it

needs material resources , ie, has to work to pay for them.

 

the lunatics are running the asylum. and they make sure the children

become like them.

Society forms persons so people are society more than they are

individuals. We may _think_ and _believe_ we are individuals while

actually being pawns in society, totally, thoroughly brain-washed by

society. We have become puppets, slaves to everything around us.

 

Who needs the future, society or you?

 

Are we aware that all our thoughts, ideas and emotions about the

future are possessing us?

the insecurity about the future is not without cause. imho our society /

economy encourages this sort of insecurity. to live you need land. they

don't make land anymore. etc. so you worry about getting money to pay the

mortgage. after a certain age if you lose your job it is very difficult to

find one. etc.

 

these are genuine concerns. in the days of the buddha he had the privilege

of abandoning everything and heading into the forest. today that is not

practical. almost all resources necessary to live (meaning the ones which

could fetch a price) are under possession.

 

so today you need skill as well to stay alive. if you go around as a mystic

in love, likely will be locked up and injected with mind-numbing drugs.

 

our society has become too powerful and the root of that power is the

possession of all land. there are ways to fix it but i don't think we'll be

able to change this system in our lifetime.

I appologize for my little nasty attempt of a joke. A bit cheap to use

swear words. I also understand that swear words in English can be more

offending to native english-speaking people (just as Swedish swear

words are more offending to a Swedish person). It's like Ken Wilber's

quadrant model. To really understand another group of people you

actually have to experience that culture not only from the outside

(empirical study, the Lower-Right quadrant), but also from _within_

that culture itself (hermeneutics, the Lower-Left quadrant).

Odysseus: Beware of the outside empirical study of the Self. It

looks beautiful but one miss the point. We cannot understand the

Self with the mind or thoughts. There is no need to get a Ph.D to

awaken to our selves. If we needed that kind of understanding. Don't

you think that there would be thousands and thousands of awaken

people throughout the world as Ramana was? To master the mind is a

great thing. Using it at will shows our intelligence. But the mind

it self keeps us away of the Self.

Hi Odysseus,

 

How are you? In your last appearances here you have spoken of your

experience. You have placed words here about matters of the Self. You

have spoken in detail. May I ask how what you have said is different

than what the author of Tripura Rahasya has done or said? What is the

difference in reading your words and the words of that author? Are

they not both words and expressions about the Self? And do not your

words and the words of that author resonate in almost precisely the

same melodies?

integrating empirical studies with subjective awareness. This means

that the mind with its ability to analyze and conceptualize may not

need to be in opposition to spiritual awakenening but rather a

necessary prerequisite for integral spiritual awakening.

The combination of 'not being based on anything'

and 'giving rise to the mind' means that ultimate

truth and conventional reality are brought together

and synthesized. The synthesis of emptiness and

phenomenal reality is composed of phenomenal

reality, emptiness of the always changing phenomenal

reality and the union of these two.

 

 

That which is called magnificence is the synthesis

of the true emptiness which does not obstruct

anything within the phenomenal universe, and

the truth that nothing within the phenomenal

universe obstructs emptiness.

 

 

There is not even the slightest dharma that

can be attained in highest complete enlightenment,

and this is what is called highest complete

enlightenment.

The marriage between emptiness and form! I like that.

 

I will alsi take the opportunity here to correct myself: I actually

did not mention Wilber's model to illustrate integral awakening but to

pinpoint the difference between looking at a culture from outside and

actually living it from the inside.

Dear Alexander,

 

I've red the chapter XV : On what need be known and need not be

known and on the Nature of the Self.

 

I am delighted to read thoses texts. So precious and so true.

 

I love particularly those sentences:

 

1- 8. " I do not see how it can be realised if it surpasses

knowledge. The goal is not achieved without realising it.

 

2- 22. " This is due to the Grace of God which puts you in the right

way of investigation. Who can attain anything worthy, without divine

Grace?

 

3- 24-25. " What you have said so far is quite true; you have rightly

understood the nature of consciousness but have not realised it. A

knowledge of the property of a thing without actual experience of

the thing itself is as useless as no knowledge.

 

4- 26. " True experience of the Self is the unawareness of even 'I

am'. Can the world persist after such unawareness? Second-hand

knowledge is no better than the recollection of a dream.

 

5- 75-84. " 'Child, there are many who being ignorant of this sublime

truth, live in a state of delusion. Dry polemics will not help one

to Reality for it is well guarded on all sides. Of all the people

now assembled here, no one has experienced Reality, except the king

and myself. It is not a subject for discussion. The most brilliant

logic can only approach it but never attain it. Although unaffected

by logic coupled with a keen intellect, it can however be realised

by service to one's Guru and the grace of God.

 

6- Such inherence is spontaneous (no effort is needed to inhere as

the Self). It is realised after thoughts are eliminated and

investigation ceases. Recapitulate your state after you break off

from it, and then will know all and the significance of its being

knowable and unknowable at the same time. Thus realising the

unknowable, one abides in immortality for ever and ever.

 

Odysseus: I will continue to read more the Tripura Rahasya. I read

it with passion. It speaks of immortality, dreams, samadhis,

Consciousness, the Self, God etc.

Dear Odysseus,

 

I found it useful to read from the beginning to the end. It is a

scripture that describes in an orderly way the progress of jnanis

towards nirvikalpa samadhi through stories and imagery, debate and

teachings.
