" Bob Dylan's " With God on Our Side " , tells the whole story very succinctly. But who knows? Maybe God was only on OUR side for the first half of the game and in a show of divine impartiality, switched sides at half-time. Now let's get ready for the second half kick-off. " God bless Sweden " sounds silly somehow. And " God bless America " also has a kind of silly ring to it, like something said by someone who does not know what he or she is talking about. " God bless humanity " sounds new-agie fluffy. " God bless me and my family " sounds like an ego trip. " God bless you and your family " sounds more ok IMNSHO. But there is always a hidden fear behind these kinds of statements, like maybe God will bless us... With some _luck_ God will bless us. But the real meaning behind " God bless... " is perhaps: if we are _nice_ God will bless us. That's not so bad. To urge one and another to be nice, to treat other people with respect and dignity. And that could be a stepping stone to a deeper form of compassion. So what President Bush really is saying by " God bless America " is perhaps: " Please, people, be nice " . al.
