Before Tokusan's enlightenment, he taught daily

and answered all questions. After his enlightenment

he stopped teaching, and anyone who asked a

question received a blow.

 

A newcomer departing his temple remonstrated:

" I have been here for thirty days and you haven't

taught me a thing. "

 

Tokusan retorted, " I sat, I walked, I ate in plain view,

and for thirty days, you didn't learnt a thing. "
