Guest guest
You seem to be on a roll, Pete re: > If you jump to conclusion, and name it > consciousness and do not see for yourself... I'm listening to an audio book written by Richard Feynman (the noted physicist). At one point he says that the way to *not know* something is to know its name. It's *not* consciousness anyway, as far as I am concerned. And any name anyone comes up for " it " is automatically wrong. Why? Because it is not an " it " in the first place. It may seem more " stable " than the waves on the ocean you talk about, but that is only an appearance, in my view. It is like looking at the face of a loved one. It is never the same face twice. And the more you go into it... this *deep down* stuff you talk about (rather eloquently I do say) the more rich and variable it is. It is like when you first go into a deep cave. At first everything looks the same, because your eyes haven't adjusted to the very dim light. But as your eyes adjust to the darkness there is all kinds of stuff there. So yeah, if you call it something, or think it is this or that, then as you say, you're right back fluttering on the surface again. Better to do the only terminal inquiry there is, the inquiry into existence itself. Sit quietly, feel yourself be! What is there to feel? If you close your eyes, you'll see darkness. Of course, you can't close your ears, you will always hear sounds, no matter how faint. Can you hear the silence in between? How does that feel? You'll feel your body, you'll feel the chair, the floor under you, you'll feel your breath, your thoughts. What else? Can you feel what feels? Is there a basic feeling to being? Yes, there is, go deep below all other feelings with attentive quietness, and you'll sink to something so basic, so devoid of qualities that it feels alien, like an infinite otherness, yet so alive it could be no other, but existence itself. If you jump to conclusion, and name it consciousness and do not see for yourself, then you'll always float on the surface, tossed around by actions and emotions, and flirting with spiritual ideas, always playing at decorating your cell with fancy words. Pete Well done. Phil
