This body aquired the habit of smoking over many years. Self watches this and remains aloof. In maya, I see the body smoking and feel concerned about its health. I want to turn away from the desire to smoke but how? I know I don't need to but I want to. How do I take back control? " Silver " Control is an illusion. If you look closely, you'll notice that habitual mental and physical patterns are just thoughts that don't drive you to do anything. If you beat yourself mercilessly every day at 6AM for 20 years, hoping to become enlightened, and then you became convinced that it would never work, you would still be reminded at 6AM every day and you might even reach for the whip out of habit, but would you continue to beat yourself? Every time you smoke, notice that you choose it. Even the physical nicotine withdrawal is sourced in the longing to fulfill the desire and need not occur at all. Resistance is never the way. I read something by a master once about smoking and I intuitively like his approach. He suggested that you embrace the process as consciously as possible. Turn it into a ritual done at specified times, consciously remove the cigarette and roll it in your hands, inhale the aroma, take your time, light it and savor it with all the senses, not allowing yourself to be distracted by anything. Don't have any personal experience with it, but the idea is that, if this is practiced in full consciousness, the silliness of the whole process will soon become apparent and therefore the desire to perform this meaningless ritual. The denial of the actual silliness is what allows it to continue to be chosen. Might be worth a try. To attempt to control it is to set up an internal conflict where you simultaneously choose to do it and not to do it. Difficult to say who will win. Hehe.
