Guest guest
I`ve been haunted by a question and still can`t get a straight answer. What is truly harmful? I remember reading an answer in Niz. book that was so simple, wish I could remember. I don`t have an answer yet. Help me with that, please. Patricia Hi Patricia: I would say this: Believing there is something truly harmful, makes it so. The 'lost innocence " of a soul, having eaten from the tree--- knowledge of good and evil, conclusively. Ana I agree. I'm trying to imagine in what context Niz would find something harmful. I'm curious about what he had to say. Phil
Guest guest
> I`ve been haunted by a question and still can`t get a > straight answer. > What is truly harmful? Here is my view: All harm derives from a false belief in an " existential self " . The existential self is the supposed actor or doer. So for example, if thoughts arise, the belief that there is an entity behind the arising of the thoughts is the belief in an existential self. Many discussing nondual matters will talk like concepts, thoughts, etc. are problematic. But they are not (my view). It is the notion of an existential self that is problematic and the " root of all evil " Of course, one may ask, *who* has the false belief. But there is no one that has such a belief. You might say the belief is " virtual " , i.e. that the operations of perception, thought, action, etc. all are *as if* orchestrated by such a belief. Incidentally, you mentioned Nisargadatta, and a common remark to those who asked him questions was that their notion " I am the body " is the root of their problem. The notion " I am this my body " is essentially the same as belief in an existential self. Bill
