Before you came to this understanding, who's wants did you think they were, or where did you think they came from? Phil

Something like the color of your hair, color of your skin! You can call them 'yours' people can call them 'yours', yet, you don't get to " choose " or " reject " them! They remain quite independent of your choice! Ah, I see. Thanks for explaining. Yes, it doesn't seem that we get to choose because we don't. Hehe. Choice is an illusion. Desires simply are, and pretending to choose that they aren't is just a mind fantasy. This applies to all mental activity. We don't choose what we believe, we don't choose our thoughts and we don't choose what to feel. These things only change in the course of greater understanding. But, how can I be at peace when I don't have what I want? ... This confusion comes about because we believe that our 'wants' have 'independent' reality independent of ourselves! We believe that our wants are something that are real and absolute and that they come from a place outside of us! We forget it is we ourselves that create them! So anytime when we create 'wants' that are not in harmony... we create suffering and pain! On the other hand, when our 'wants' are aligned with the present moment... we have Real Power and Peace! The power lies in understanding that our 'wants' are our own creations! The power lies in realizing that it is us who create these want and the power to create, change, sustain or drop them lies within us! When you don't want Present Moment... When you don't want... 'What Is'... there is Stress, there is Suffering! When you want Present Moment, What Is... there is Peace, there is Joy... there is Love! And, at any moment... you can NOT change 'What is' is... because, it is already... IS! You can only be [mentally] aligned with it, in harmony with it or you can fight a [mental] war against it! That which already IS... doesn't change by what you mentally think about it! But, your mental stance 'in harmony' or 'in opposition' to it defines you Inner World... every Moment! ... 'Wants' are no more than thoughts! They have no independent reality just like your thoughts don't have a reality independent of you. Once you start becoming Aware, Conscious of your thoughts, once you become Present to see their arising - you can see how and when they arise! You will also realize that many of them are not even 'your' wants! Many of them are simply triggered by a commercial that you watched or by something else that you saw/heard on TV or read or herd from a friend! You will also realize that creating and feeding a 'want' that has no independent reality and serves no real purpose other than making an enemy out of the present moment and creating suffering is Insane! At any moment, you can not change the Reality but, you can certainly change your attitude towards it, your relationship with it. You can change your... 'wants'! and, that will instantly change and transform Your World! ---- [And, please remember that aligning your thoughts with the present moment is not incompatible with goals, plans or having general directions! See the reality, understand the reality, fully embrace the reality and the, do what you see fit! Learn to welcome the Present Moment and you will see that the Present Moment always welcomes you!]

Niz suggested to one of his questioners to invert his wants from wanting what one does not have to not wanting what one does not have.
