Randy : Yes, but the belief that one

is the body is much deeper than just

thoughts. It pervades what one friend

of mine calls the Deep Mind

(that part of mind that underlies

thinking). This cannot be released

just by thinking about it, so the

" basking " in a teacher's presence is

really time spent working on this

(provided it is a real teacher).

clyde: How is time " 'basking' in a

teacher's presence ... really time

spent working on this " ? Is the

teacher's presence massaging the Deep

Mind? Or what?

....

As one of my friends said:

----it is like *effortless* meditation!

In the company of those *realized*

souls [according to my friend who has

met and spent time with Osho, JK and

few others], meditation and peace and

.... the Silence of mind descends on its

own without making any effort on your

part!

The mediation and peace that takes

great effort and sometime log time to

achieve seems to occur by itself just

by being in such presence! You [in his

words] get calm, quiet and you feel all

your questions, concerns, comments,

your *thinking mind* automatically drop!

He called it being *meditated*!

And, he says many times after such

*meetings*, he would feel so expanded

and quiet and he would not talk for

hours! He would also have very few

thoughts in that period.

He is certainly not the only one who

has felt it and described this *effect*!

I have heard and read account from

many others as well as from a friend

who came to see a guru with me some

time back!

....

I too have had many such occurrences

in varying degrees. Many times, I have

had this in the presence of people who

were not even *gurus*. Many times, I

have this *effortless* *involuntary*

Silence experience in the presence of

people who did not even claim to be

*spiritual*!

And, I do think it is very valuable!

When it happens it gives you a *taste*

and direct experience of *PEACE* that

mere words and *intellectual

discussion* can rarely do!

....

As for its usefulness... some call it

*shaktipat*, some call it... *glimpse*

or *satori*!

Just by this direct experience of

PEACE a *seed* has been planted in you!

Your mediation, your practice, your

awareness as well as more of these

*direct experiences even when they only

occur is a *guru* presence can

strengthen it!

....

Of course, I wouldn't suggest that

someone should depend on it and abandon

inquiry, mediation or Awareness Practice!

regards,

ac.

This effortless, *PEACE* experience is

described by Paul Burton, David

Goodman, Robert Adams and by many

others in regard to their meeting with

Ramana.

According to many accounts, Maharshi

spoke very little. Many times, he

didn't even answer questions and he

rarely engaged in long intellectual or

philosophical debates. In the absence

of all this, it was mainly the *peace*

of his presence that attracted people

to him and that made many of them even

stay for an extended period of time!

If I remember correctly, Maharshi even

said the words to the effect that one

should use the degree of peace felt in

their presence as the one of the

criteria of jnani.

....

Almost every chapter in the book of

collection of Papaji discourses, people

say words like... Papaji, I experience

such peace in your presence!

....

There are many such accounts of people

with other gurus too!
