One is not unpopular because he uses peculiar expressions; that just

so happens; such terms become a fad, and by and by everybody, down to

the last simpleton, uses them. But a person who follows through an

idea in his mind is, and always will be, essentially unpopular. That

is why Socrates was unpopular, though he did not use any special

terms, for to grasp and hold his 'ignorance' requires greater vital

effort than understanding the whole of Hegel's philosophy.

Soren Kierkegaard

Hail Mother, who art the earth, Hallowed be thy soil, rock and flora

that nourish and support all life. Blessed be thy wind that gives us

breath and thy waters that quench, bathe and refresh all living

things. Holy Earth - as one - we praise your majesty, grace and

wonder.

Bill Faherty

He who wonders discovers that this in itself is wonder.

Maurits Corneille Escher

Those who see worldly life as an obstacle to Dharma see no Dharma in

everyday actions; they have not discovered that there are no everyday

actions outside of Dharma.

Dogen Zenji

There are places where the mind dies so that a truth which is its

very denial may be born.

Albert Camus

The truth is that even big collections of ordinary books distort

space, as can readily be proved by anyone who has been around a

really old-fashioned secondhand bookshop, one of those that look as

though they were designed by M. Escher on a bad day and has more

staircases than storeys and those rows of shelves which end in little

doors that are surely too small for a full- sized human to enter. The

relevant equation is: Knowledge = power = energy = matter = mass; a

good bookshop is just a genteel Black Hole that knows how to

read.

Terry Pratchett

In an orchestra we have many nationalities, types, and temperaments.

We have learned to forget individual likes, dislikes, and differences

of temperament for the sake of music to which we have dedicated our

lives. I often wonder if we could not solve the world's problems on a

similar basis of harmony. Think what a single individual in a

symphony orchestra can accomplish by giving up his individual traits

and ambitions in the service of music. . . . Suppose that in life you

had the same all-embracing love for the whole of mankind and for your

neighbor in particular. Only when every one of us and every nation

learns the secret of love for all mankind will the world become a

great orchestra, following the beat of the Greatest Conductor of

all.

Artur Rodzinski

The first gatherings of the garden in May of salads, radishes and

herbs made me feel like a mother about her baby - how could anything

so beautiful be mine. And this emotion of wonder filled me for each

vegetable as it was gathered every year. There is nothing that is

comparable to it, as satisfactory or as thrilling, as gathering the

vegetables one has grown.

Alice B. Toklas

in any non-trivial axiomatic system, there are true theorems which

cannot be proven.

Kurt Godel

He who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as

good as dead; his eyes are closed.

Albert Einstein

" When you wake up in the morning, Pooh, " said Piglet at last, " what's

the first thing you say to yourself? " " What's for breakfast? " said

Pooh. " What do you say, Piglet? " " I say, I wonder what's going to

happen exciting today? " said Piglet . Pooh nodded thoughtfully. " It's

the same thing, " he said. " What's that? " the Unbeliever

asked. " Wisdom from the Western Taoist, " I said. " It sounds like

something from Winnie-the-Pooh , " he said. " It is, " I said. " That's

not about Taoism, " he said. " Oh, yes it is, " I said. "

Benjamin Hoff

True wisdom is less presuming than folly. The wise man doubteth

often, and changeth his mind; the fool is obstinate, and doubteth

not; he knoweth all things but his own ignorance.

Akhnaton

The need to be right - the sign of a vulgar mind.

Albert Camus

The human mind has first to construct forms, independently, before we

can find them in things.

Albert Einstein

To be satisfied with a little, is the greatest wisdom; and he that

increaseth his riches, increaseth his cares; but a contented mind is

a hidden treasure, and trouble findeth it not.

Akhnaton

Do everything with a mind that lets go. Do not expect praise or

reward.

Achaan Chah

No matter how much we learn, there is always more knowledge to be

gained. In this connection I am reminded of a short poem that has

been in my mind over the years. It reads as follow: I used to think I

knew I knew. But now I must confess. The more I know I know I know I

know I know the less.

A. Ray Olpin

" Each time that something comes to your mind regarding Allah - know

that He is different from that! " Commentary: If you think and believe

that He is what all the schools of Islam profess and believe - He is

that, and He is other than that! If you think that He is what diverse

communities believe - Muslims, Christians, Jews, Mazdeans,

polytheists and others - He is that and He is other than that! And if

you think and believe what is professed by the Knowers par

excellence - prophets, saints and angels - He is that! He is other

than that! None of His creatures worships Him in all His aspects;

none is unfaithful to Him in all His aspects. No one knows Him in all

His aspects; no one is ignorant of Him in all His aspects. Those who

are among the most knowing regarding Him have said: " Glory to Thee.

We have no knowledge except what You have taught us. " (Koran 2:32)

'Abd al-Kader

I stopped watching the game and sat back to watch the fans. It was

like watching a Fassbinder film, depicting mankind at its most

berserk. The experience made me wonder if we're not breeding a

society that lacks self-esteem. I don't think we pat people on the

back enough, letting them know that being able to fix a sink is just

as much skill as being able to get Rod Carew out with the bases

loaded. And more worthwhile, if you were to ask me. People must be

made to feel their value. Otherwise, when they discover they can't

find any thrills in religion or in cults, they head out to the

ballpark, seeking a vicarious sense of fulfilment. They're tired of

long-term reality; they don't recognize what it has to offer them.

All they want is one good fantasy. Realizing that really shook me

up.

Bill Lee

Don't be fooled by me. Don't be fooled by the face I wear. For I wear

a thousand masks, masks that I am afraid to take off and none of them

are me. Pretending is an art that's second nature with me, but don't

be fooled. For God's sake don't be fooled. I give the impression that

I am secure, that all is sunny and unruffled with me, within as well

as without, that confidence is my name and coolness my game; that the

waters are calm and I am in command, and that I need no one. But

don't believe me, please. My surface may seem smooth, but my surface

is my mask, ever-varying and ever-concealing 'Neath this lies no

complacence. Beneath dwells the real me in confusion, in fear, and

aloneness. But I hide this. I don't want anybody to know. I panic at

the thought of my weakness and fear of being exposed. That is why I

frantically create a mask to hide behind; a nonchalant, sophisticated

facade, to help me pretend, to shield me from the glance that knows.

But such a glance is precisely my salvation. My only salvation. And I

know it. That is, if it is followed by acceptance, if it is followed

by love. It is the only thing that will assure me of what I can't

assure myself, that I am worth something. But, I don't tell you this.

I don't dare. I am afraid to. I am afraid your glance will not be

followed by acceptance and love. I am afraid you will think less of

me, that you will laugh at me, and that you will see this and reject

me. So I play my game, my desperate game, with a facade of assurance

without, and a trembling child within. And so begins the parade of

masks, and my life becomes a front. I idly chatter to you in the

suave tones of surface talk. I tell you everything that is really

nothing, and nothing of what is everything, of what is crying within

me; So when I am going through my routine do not be fooled by what I

am saying. Please listen carefully and try to hear what I am not

saying. What I would like to be able to say, what for survival I need

to say, but I can't say. I dislike hiding, Honestly! I dislike the

superficial game I am playing, the phony game. I would really like to

be genuine and spontaneous, and me, but you have got to help me. You

have got to hold out your hand, even when that is the last thing I

seem to want. Only you can wipe away from my eyes that blank stare of

breathing death. Only you can call me into aliveness. Each time you

try to understand and because you really care, my heart begins to

grow wings, very small wings, very feeble wings, but wings. With your

sensitivity and sympathy, and your power of understanding, you can

breathe life into me. I want you to know that. I want you to know how

important you are to me, how you can be the creator of the person

that is me if you choose to. Please choose to. You alone can break

down the wall behind which I tremble, you alone can remove my mask.

You alone can release me from my shadow world of panic and

uncertainty; From my lonely person. Do not pass me by. Please . . .

do not pass me by. It will not be easy for you; a long conviction of

worthlessness builds strong walls. The nearer you approach me, the

blinder I strike back. I fight against the very thing I cry out for.

But I am told that love is stronger than walls, and in this lies my

hope. Please try to beat down those walls with firm hands, but with

gentle hands for a child is very sensitive. Who am I, you may wonder?

I am someone you know very well. For I am every man you meet and I am

every woman you meet.

Charles C. Finn

As knowledge increases, wonder deepens.

Charles Morgan

I wonder why it is that we are not all kinder to each other than we

are. How much the world needs it! How easily it is done!
