" To be nonviolent to human beings and to be a killer or enemy of the

poor animals is Satan's philosophy. In this age there is always

enmity against poor animals, and therefore the poor creatures are

always anxious. The reaction of the poor animals is being forced on

human society, and therefore there is always strain of cold or hot

war between men, individually, collectively or nationally. "

A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada,

in Srimad-Bhagavatam (1.10.6)

" Every act of irreverence for life, every act which neglects life,

which is indifferent to and wastes life, is a step towards the love

of death. This choice man must make at every minute. Never were the

consequences of the wrong choice as total and as irreversible as they

are today. Never was the warning of the Bible so urgent: `I have put

before you life and death, blessing and curse. Choose life, that you

and your children may live.'

(Deuteronomy 30:19) " Erich Fromm

" To avoid causing terror to living beings, let the disciple refrain

from eating meat... the food of the wise is that which is consumed by

the sadhus [holymen]; it does not consist of meat... There may be

some foolish people in the future who will say that I permitted meat-

eating and that I partook of meat myself, but... meat-eating I have

not permitted to anyone, I do not permit, I will not permit meat-

eating in any form, in any manner and in any place; it is

unconditionally prohibited for

all. "

The Buddha in Dhammapada

destruction of one of them leads to the protection of many others.

Those who have forsaken the killing of all; those who are helpmates

The very emphasis of the commandment: Thou shalt not kill, makes it

knocked down my throat. And I'm extremely competitive on a tennis

When I walked out of there, I knew I would never again harm an

animal! I knew all the physiological, economic, and ecological

arguments supporting vegetarianism, but it was firsthand experience

of man's cruelty to animals that laid the real groundwork for my

commitment to vegetarianism. "

We are digressing here to vegetarianism as a solo theme. Not my

So after all these quotes you´re still not vegetarian? Maybe you

should visit a slaughterhouse? Or kill an animal with your hands and

eat it?

Actually, I am working on it. Grains.veggies.fruits.And baked goods.

OH the Baked GOODS! Seriously though, I applaud you. I want this to

be a way of life for me as well. That's why the posts..a self

reminder and reflection as much as anything. I got off on this

tangent from the quote on racism of Bob Marley, posted by Silver. It

set in motion a caravan of intellections as to why, in considering

this awful war, as all wars are, we would ONLY think of the differing

races of men. That idea seems to me to give short shift of a complete

analysis. We are many types of being. Being human of any caste,

colour, creed, persuasion(religious or otherwise) or ethnicity, is

not necessarily the only consideration.IMHO.

For now I'm chillin' wantin' to be vegan...bob

It´s always good to hear.

After few weeks it´s really easy, just a matter of a new habit.

The most difficult is the social part: friends, family.

But who cares about them ;-)

We are so self-centred that it´s hard for us to realize that we

arent´t more important and superiour to other species.

I'll vouch for that. My girlfriend is vegetarian and I love

whatever she cooks. It's actually making me realize I don't need

meat anymore. Tofu and Soy really aren't that bad. I'm getting

used to them.

It's quite an insight to see that we humans are inconsistent in our

You can also try quorn, which tastes like chicken and fantastic

veggie burgers. You almost don´t realize that it´s vegetarian.

And, funny, when I see non veggie meals now, they seem so poor

compared to what I eat.

It is so strange that it would never occur to us to eat our pet.

So it has something to do with contact, attention, friendship.

Thanks, Len. I'll mention it to her. And it's true about meals

with meat. They do look and taste different now that I've been

introduced to vegetarianism. For me, it's the health factor.

Eating vegetarian style has made me more conscious of my health

overall. I don't smoke anymore and I eat better and i'm noticing a

huge difference.

Nothing but advantages.

They say that if we ate plants instead feeding them to the animals

and eating them, the problem of famine in the world would be solved.

I´m not sure whether it´s true (there will be still a problem of

getting the food to those who are hungry) but it´s again an

important argument.

No, I´m cruel with plants ;-)

Maybe if my sensitivity raises a litle bit higher, I´ll become a

fruitarian ;-)

It might be true that you are what you eat. In highschool I

ingested lots of cannabis and consequently behaved much like a plant

in the classroom; I behave like a nut sometimes and this is directly

attributable to my love for peanuts; I'd better back off the fruit

before I become one. Lol.
