If you do a bit of research on the internet, you'll come across

documents and stories detailing how Mohondas Ghandi ate meat and drank

milk and that Hitler was a strict Vegan.

Hello Michael...funny how Adolph had the right idea on the treatment

of animals and of his personal vehicle of organized perception. There

was much lacking there however in his treatmant of fellow homo

sapiens. Perhaps he just saw meat as meat and had a glimpse of some

of his camps. That would have been a defining moment for Herr Hitler

I'm sure. But it is a scary thought. Incredibly we also hear that in

private, the head Nazi was an unassuming personality. You would never

know it to see him orate. It is of interest as well(in considering

the insistence of the sage G.W. Bush, that what the U.S. military is

accomplishing in Iraq is the safeguarding of Democracy and Freedom)

that Mr. A.H. was elected democraticaly in a free election.

Unfortunately those freedoms and rights do not offer sure promise of

a seemly result. As we can currently see unfolding in the cradle of

civilization. As to the Mahatma..hmmm? That's a comforting thought

for an omnivorous personage who holds him in the highest regard but,

I really am having a hard time coming to grips with that notion. I

bow to your knowledge on the matter but just in case of error, and to

further my own education on the historical Ghandi, I'll take you up

on the offer of doing more research.

Namaste,

I don't know whether Ghandiji ate meat as a youngster, but later on

he did eat some eggs at the insistence of Yogananda, whilst ill. I

doubt that he ate meat otherwise--it would violate his whole being

and Ahimsa.....or non violence. His awareness was too high to eat

meat..........

Thank you Tony...you have relieved me of a very disturbing mental

picture. Like I said at first blush, this was indeed a concept that

was hard to tune up to if you know what I mean. Thanks again for the

So, eating meat is violence to animals? What about eating plants?

I think this can be carried to an extreme. One can say that even

breathing is violent since we kill countless microbes in the

process. Shall we stop eating and breathing so as not to violate

our whole Ahimsa? (Whatever that means.) One who breaths is not

aware. LOL. Sheesh.

food has much influence on the (restless) mind......

maybe it's not by " the right food " that one can get a quite

and " balanced " mind.....

but a quite and " balanced " mind " choose " automatically the necessary

food....to keep on being.....and feeling..... " balanced " .....

Namaste S,IMHO,

It is all about trying to subdue and eliminate the ego. I firmly

believe one cannot be very advanced on the spiritual path and eat

meat, for it violates Ahimas and Daya or compassion.

We have to start somewhere, and animals have a much more evolved

nervous system than plants and feel pain. Plants may react to

stimuli and consciousness for all is one..read--'Secret lives of

plants'etc.

I suppose those who only eat nuts and berries are taking it to its

logical conclusion. However we have to start somewhere and

vegetarianism is the first step.......

I mean seriously how can one call oneself spiritual and condone the

torture and murder of innocent animals..it shows both a lack of

awareness and selfish egoistic desire...Tony.

Yes it is funny! but listen up if you missed it a while back, Len

told us about a corn variety that tastes like children. Wait Let me

go back and check it out....Oh hell, I need to get my spectacle

proscription or perscription redone! He wrote " quorn that tastes like

chicken " ..(message 35818). Sorry Len..my mistake. But it sounded

interesting and still does with the new knowledge. See..that's why

it's important to read and re read and re read.

Deny..deny..deny. 'Cause as a great leader once said, " It all depends

on what your definition of the word 'is'..is. " And to the point re

eating plants and so forth and doing them violence: it's okey dokey

as long as you first establish in your mind of minds and heart of

spades that you HATE plants. This the modern media tells me

so.........

Namaste,

What has that got to do with my post? I don't know whether Christ,

presumably you mean Jesua as Christ doesn't eat anything, ate meat.

The word in the gospels is just a greek word for any food.

Ghandi probably had some experiences with some blacks in South

Africa, nothing much has change in RSA. It was probably only a

personal and temporary experience.

Mother Teresa I don't know about....tony

Namaste,

Anyone who eats meat lacks compassion and higher awareness, no matter

if their IQ is 200. They also are unable to overcome their addiction

to the decaying flesh of dead animals. Their ego desire is more

important than the torture and suffering of animals, how selfish and

unspiritual is that?...Tony

Well, I can't argue with that at all. I have to agree and I will

make a more concerted effort, with the help of my wonderfully health

conscious vegetarian girlfriend, to eliminate meat from my diet.

She has done so and doesn't seem to be getting any worse for it. In

fact, her cooking is absolutely deliscious. Not at all difficult to

get used to. I was just going along with it because that's the type

of guy I am. Easy to get along with. But, I strongly object to

harming any living creature. Being a Witch, I strive to live by the

Witche's Rede, as I've mentioned before, which says, 'An It Harm

None, Do As Ye Wilt.' Very challenging rule to follow. Thank you

Bob for starting this conversation, thank you Tony for your useful

insight and thank you Len for the inspiration. Great stuff. And

thanks to anyone else I may have forgotten to mention here.

:)
