Can we tell the instant we go over the brink

into deep sleep? Can we discern that very

moment when we become awake? Can we

remember that first flash of consciousness

that came with birth, or was it before, while still

in the womb? No, we can't. It's such a smooth

slipping away, such gentle fading into Not, and

such equally gentle coming back.

Could it be, we never really left? That we are

always there? Deep sleep, and Death are

always near, always at hand. They are Us.

Consciousness is a trick, a mirage, an

appearance, just a seeming to be.

Don't just believe or disbelieve, see for your-

self. Sit, be quiet, attentive, let the mind settle,

subside, slip away. If you're lucky it will sink

to depth you didn't guess you had. Deep

sleep, Death are there, like an iron mountain

under the sea. And thou, oh lucid dreamer, thou

are that.

I like that.

'We' are always present, here, now, as Self. We never leave, but merely step

into 'human consciousness', leaving a trail of broken twigs and bent grass

that anyone can see. When we step back out, we leave no footprints at all, like

stepping from the shore into the sea. Even the most cunning tracker can't

follow. But still, there we are, until the sun rises again. hmmm.....
